About 10:00 am today in near 80 temps, pretty dry, end result below.

About a 15 minute or so race, did not involve a fast dog, but he ain't slow either. Has a decent nose, so I guess, and "follows" a rabbit okay. This is not the only time he has done it and not just pop can rabbits either. He is fun to watch.

I will run him, my FC female, or anything I have anytime or anywhere, just show up!!

Last trial I attended, Great Miami. Pack of 7, 13 inch females left on a driving race ending in a dead buck rabbit that was eaten before the judges got there. Trialers are packing heat, I have seen it with my own eyes. Guys need to get there hounds that they brag on ready and show up at an event, you may be humbled as I have been.

Lastly, as far as the original question, yes extra barking is a fault as is lack of barking by my standards and by several others. Fast dogs can be clean, but what "clean" is your normal???? That is my biggest issue with all these discussions. We all have different things to judge by unless we all show up at the same trial. I would love to see all these fast and "clean" dogs that are mentioned, again relative to what your "clean" is...

Good running to all!Image

WELL, i would say in 80degree temps and fairly dry conditions that the hound ran pretty fast and clean to do that. Will $200 buy him? :D

I like him pretty well. He is fun to hunt. Hope to raise some little ones like him one of these days.

Oh by the way he got bit with a copperhead last week and this was his first day back at action. I think he is tough enough as well.

bc beagles::::: you say your hunt this mornin didnt involve a fast dog but he aint slow either... what would you call him maybe a medium speed? the ' follow " comment you made may have been refering to one of my previous post... there are dogs that are comfortable ' following ' a track... and some want to push.....the original thread subject was to try to understand the thoughts of people when it came to mouthy foolish dogs... do you feel like your male that caught this big bunny barks to much,, or is he tight,,, or is he kinda in between... im just wandering what kinda dog it would take to be able to catch a rabbit in 80 degree temp ,,,,and this just after he was copperhead bit last week... and to conclude,,, is this dog for sale or trade????depending on what style he is,,, i might would like to have him.....

I HAVE READ ALL THESE POSTS AND FIND SOME VERY ENLIGHTNING AND SOME AMUSING AND SOME POSTED LITERALLY TO THROW OFF ON SOMEONE'S DOG OR DOG'S. I'VE BEEN RABBIT HUNTING WITH BEAGLERS 51 YEARS. I KNOW THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME A PROFESSOR OR DO I HAVE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN THE SPORT, BUT I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF DOGS. LET'S ALL BE HONEST, WE ALL WANT THE DOG THAT WHEN HE BARKS HE HAS JUMPED THE RABBIT AND WE CAN SAY WATCH FOR IT. WHEN HE MAKES A CHECK HE COMES OUT OF IT ROLLING ON. WHEN A CHECK IS MADE AND HE BARKS YOU CAN SAY THERE GOES THE RABBIT AND KNOW YOU ARE RIGHT. I HAVE FOUND THAT THE BETTER DOGS GET MELIGNED MORE THAN A JUST THERE DOG DOES. THERE IS A LOT OF JELOUSY IN HUNTERS. EVERY ONE MUST BE NUMBER 1. PLEASE REMEMBER HUNTING IS A SPORT AND TRY TO CONDUCT YOURSELF IN A SPORTING FASHION. I OWNED A DOG THAT CAUGHT 29 FULL GROWN RABBITS IN HOT, WEATHER IN IN 11 DAYS AND TOOK HIM HOME AND TIED HIM UP TO SAVE OUR RUNNING GROUNDS. ENTERED HIM IN ARHA AND MADE GRAND CHAMPION WITHOUT A LOSE. THI DOG WAS COMPLETELY CLEAN AND CAUGHT ALL HIS RABBITS ON THE RUN. I WOULD GO TO OUR HUNTING PLACE AND BUDDIES (SO CALLED) WOULD PULL UP AND LOOK IN MY DOG BOX AND IF I HAD HIM THEY WOULD DRIVE AWAY. IF ENTERED IN CLUB HUNT, AFTER A FEW HUNTS GUYS WOULD WITH DRAW THERE DOGS. GOOD SPORTS! I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO HUNT WITH THE BEST DOGS I CAN FIND, MINE OR YOURS. LET'S BE ABLE TO SAY YOUR DOG IS BETTER THAN MINE, BUT I WILL GET SOMETHING TO RUN WITH YOU. DON'T MELIGN A GOOD DOG TO UP HOLD FOR A AVERAGE DOG. I GUESS THE POINT OF ALL OF THIS IS A TRUE RABBIT HUNTER KNOWS A GOOD DOG AND THAT HE DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE THE BEST. BE A GOOD SPORT AND CONGRATULATE THAT MAN THAT BEATS YOU, HE HAS SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY GETTING WHAT HE HAS GOT. SOME SPEND A LIFE TIME LOOKING FOR A DOG LIKE ONE THEY HAVE WITH,BUT NEVER OWNED AND DO NOT FIND IT. DON'T DISCOURGE THEM BUT ENCOURGE. WE ARE A RARE BREED OF MEN THAT HAVE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO HUNT WITH TRUE HUNTERS AND GREAT, NOT AVERAGE DOG'S. I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT BOTH HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE KIND OF MAN I AM. HUNTING WILL CEASE BUT WHAT YOU SAY MAY NEVER BE FORGOTTEN OR FORGIVEN. ABOVE ALL ,WITH RESPECT TO ALL HUNTERS, AND ALL MEN, KNOW THAT A DOG LIVES A SHORT LIFE, BUT YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER. JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OF LORDS AND KING OF KINGS. COME TO KNOW HIM. FOR IN HIM IS WISDOM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Black bart... i agree with everything you say... i was just wondering however, this grand champion that you are refering to,,,, was he a tight mouthed dog or loose.....do you feel like your dog could run a rabbit... please rate 1- 10... on ability to run a track... and the amount of foolishness that he gave... just wondering....

THIS DOG WAS CONSIDERED A HOT NOSED DOG BECAUSE HE WOULD NOT BARK BEFORE A JUMP, AND WOULD NOT BARK IN CHECK AREA WITH OUT HE ROLLED ON THE LINE. BUT THIS DOG WOULD JUMP RABBITS IN ONE HUNDRED DEGREE WEATHER OR BELOW ZERO. WHEN OTHER DOGS WERE LAYING IN THE SHADE OR COULD NOT SEEM TO SMELL A RABBIT. IT IS PROVEN THE AMOUNT OF MOUTH DOES NOT DETERMINE NOSE, BUT BRAINS. THE OBJECT OF A GOOD DOG IS TO CATCH ITS QUARRY, WHICH IS THE RABBIT. WHEN THE COLD NOSED, BARKING DOG'S CAME IN ON A CHECK HE WOULD STRAITEN THE RABBIT.YEARS AGO ME AND MY BROTHER BOUGHT A DOG OFF A MAN,THAT THE MAN SAID WAS THE BEST DOG HE HAD EVER SEEN. WE BROUGHT IT HOME AND WE TRIED IT AND IT WAS AN AVERAGE DOG. MY BROTHER SAID THAT SO AND SO LIED TO US. I THOUGHT A MINUTE AND I SAID WHAT DID THAT MAN SAY. HE SAID, HE SAID THAT WAS THE BEST DOG HE HAD EVER SEEN. I SAID MAY BE THAT IS THE BEST DOG HE EVER SEEN. AFTER REFLECTION MY BROTHER SAID, YOU KNOW MAY BE THAT IS THE BEST DOG HE EVER SEEN, MAY BE HE DIDN'T LIE. I HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO HUNT WITH SOME GOOD DOG'S THAT WERE HONEST AND SOME GOOD DOGS THAT HAD EXTRA MOUTH. I PREFER THE MORE CLEAN MOUTHED DOG. BUT EITHER ONE IS NOT A GOOD DOG IF THEY CANNOT BRING THE RABBIT TO THE GUN OR PUT IT IN THE GROUND. BUT THIS IS JUST ONE MAN'S OPINION. HUNT WHAT YOU PREFER AND ENJOY THEM. ( JUDGE NOT THAT YOU BE NOT JUDGED)

See low, he is upper medium. He takes the front when needed. He barks when he is moving forward on the rabbit. He tends to tighten up when getting ready to catch one. He has a squall mouth he shortens to more of a chop as he bears down on one. He, IMO, opens as they should. I have not seen him open excessively in the check in the time I have owned him, he is honest with his mouth and I like that(had him 1.5 yrs). He is no super dog, but he gets done his job most of the time.

I have personally let go more than a few for popping off in the check and not moving it forward with intent to extend the race. I don't like it at all, but some may think it is okay and that is there choice.

I don't see how folks can say nose power and tracking abilities are not linked? I will not say it is all nose, BUT the combination of NOSE and TRACKING ability have lead to the best pursuing beagles I can think of. This is just my opinion. I will also say that lack of tracking and too much nose(with lack of proper brain balance) has let me see some hounds I would not keep. These type barked multiple times in the same area without movement and I don't like that. Call it grubbing, working, whatever, I don't like it, BUT some are impressed by it and they are the one feeding the dogs. So I am not going to judge them.

Beelick, "It's just a baby rabbit". Agreed, but to run a small rabbit with the ability to track it accurately and quickly enough for consistant time to catch is what it is about. Does this dog catch every rabbit he runs, HECK NO!! However, his correct use of mouth, continuing forward movement, and nose and brain together allow him to pursue with intent to catch. He is a decent dog and suits me.

See low hunt what you like and have fun with it. I was just giving an example of what makes me go back time and time again. Not going to brag my hound up anymore, he can lack hunt sometimes on a very slow day and he pulls at the pen wire when waiting on his feed and these two things make me angry!!

All take care.

Sorry I did not answer the for sale or trade question. I normally would say everything I own has a price, but I enjoy old Jake a lot and he makes every race better to listen to with his big squall and chop. He is not for sale or trade.

Good running to all!!!

The only dog I ever owned that would catch rabbits would shut her mouth when she got real close to it. I always thought the idea was to have the dogs run the rabbits and if you chose you could shoot them. More and more I hear of people wanting dogs that go so fast they catch them. Makes sense why so much emphasis is on speed and a tight mouth a plus. I can certainly see the impact this philosophy has had on the breed......Explains why populations are diminishing around the country...Poor rabbits.....

He has a ton of Indian Hill's Majer and Dingus. He is a pretty good dog. He is not that fast just efficient, that is what I like, IMO.
