Sick pup advice
I have a 6 month old pup. Shes been in the starting pen and the fellow called me sunday and said she wasnt feeling well. So I went and picked her up and could tell she was not right. Monday evening when I went to feed her I noticed bright red blood in her stool and tiny drops of blood in her kennel. I checked her over couldnt find anything so I assume the blood drops were coming from her rectum. So I went and checked on her this morning and theres diarrhea everywhere but no more blood. Her energy level seems to be a little better and shes eating and drinking. Shes updated on her shots and I wormed her about 3 weeks ago. Just trying to avoid the high vet cost but if she needs to be seen I will take her. Help Please. Thanks

Re: Sick pup advice
Most likely worms, but it is also possible she ate woodchips, etc. and has internal bleeding, but I would say worms are the highest probability.catmaster wrote:I have a 6 month old pup. If you can get your hands on pyrantel 50mg/ml, use a double-dose (1ml/5lb), twice daily, for 3 days in a row.
Or, if you can get your hands on Safegaurd (fenbendazole) 10% liquid, again use a double-dose (2ml/5lb), twice daily, for 3 days in a row.
Both of these drugs are safe and will not harm a young pup.
The trouble with worms and pups is worms grow exponentially in pups, and pups aren't that big so they can't take the load that an adult can take. This is further compounded by the fact worms can build resistance to standard drug dosages, so many times just giving "the recommended dosage" of a common drug doesn't do a thing to treat the problem. As an example, I remember one time I had a bitch on pups who looked poor, so I gave her a healthy dose of pyrantel, but after a week she still looked poor and gaunt. So I gave her a triple-dose of both pyrantel, fenbendazole and ivermectin all at once ... and that poor bitch passed almost nothing but straight worms for 3 days straight, and I felt terrible

Moral: Be aware that just because you "gave your pups wormer" doesn't mean that the drug actually worked. If you under-dosed, it probably didn't work. If you gave the correct dose, it still might not have done the trick. Why? Again, because worms build resistance to drugs over time.
In fact, this is why drug dosages continuously change over the years. As examples, 5 years ago the dosage for pyrantel pamoate @ 50mg/ml was 1 ml/20 lb ... but now that dosage has officially doubled to 1ml/10lb. Moreover, that dosage is for roundworm only, it does not get hookworm. You need to double the dose, and give twice daily, for it to knock out hooks. Similarly, the dosage for fenbendazole used to be 1 ml/4.4lb, for 3 days in a row. Again, the dosage has doubled to be 1ml/4.4 lb, twice daily, for 3 days in a row--and few people are aware of this,. People will memorize a drug dose, and keep using it for years, and be completely unaware of the fact that "old dosage" they memorized is no longer correct ... so it helps to stay current.
Hope this information helps,
Jack
