I like to Listen to any pack run but i LOVE the WATCH the upper speed dogs rock and roll!!!!
I found out yesterday that I have a LOT of work to do with my young dogs. I have said on here before that I am not a big solo kinda guy but after what I saw yesterday I need to make the time for it even if it means cutting back on dogs. I am not doing any of the 3 running dogs I own any justice right now from what I saw yesterday. They all lack the confidence to be a good rabbit dog on their own and I think I have spent too much time running them as a pack. Ron is probably right and some brace and solo time is gonna be my answer. I can see the traits in each of them to become good rabbit dogs but they need the opportunity to build on those traits. And I'm not saying they need to be coddled but I should be giving them some more alone time and not all pack time imo. I'll try it and we'll see what happens.
And, just when I thought I had this beagling thing all figured out again I went and learned another lesson. Being humbled can be a humbling experience.

My mother always taught me BB, that if you don't learn something new every day, your not listening and unwilling to learn.
I try to be open minded most of the time but I still find myself getting caught up in what I have going on at the moment. I'm starting to think you have to be willing to listen and try what others have tried in the past but I also believe you have to still do a lot of it yourself in order to sorta learn it on your own. I think a well rounded individual has learned both sides by experience and not just through advice from others.
But you are right, I should be learning something new everyday.

my brother lives in norfolk virginia and i have ran them clear cuts and the dogs cought and killed rabbits in them. they dont do it as fast but it still happens them rabbits still get tired like they do here in michigan. if a dog can catch rabbits in the swamps of michigan it can catch them anywhere.
you say there are not dogs that are fast and clean you have a lot to learn about beagles.
i am not saying every hound i own can run them down but that is what i am looking for in my program i judge a dog by how many rabbits they bring back in there mouth.
i have 2 dogs here that have ran them down solo a few times i am talking about cottontails
when looking for a fast clean hound THEY ARE HARD TO FIND FOR EVERY 20 THAT YOU FIND THAT ARE FAST 1 WILL BE CLEAN ALSO
i have had all them styles above but try to ween the one I DONT LIKE OUT
Harner, after some more thoughtful reflection I do have to say that I don't think everyone shares our thoughts and opinions about learning from others.
Hey Chappy, Ron and I were just talking the other day about possibly adding some of the same blood you have to our kennels. When do you think you might have some time to run with us so we can check out which of your dogs we may want a pup or 2 out of...........that is if you'd be willing let us purchase a couple? And if the waiting list is a little long could we still ask to be put on it anyway? You are the only person I've heard of around here that has hounds that can get it done at all times and in all conditions no matter the terrain or geographic area. I've always wanted a hound that I can run anywhere from Florida to the farthest reaches of northern Canada and still be able to count on that dog to come out in front. And if you aren't planning any breedings soon could you at least tell me where you got your hounds from so I can maybe look into some for myself. I know I'm asking a lot but if you could oblige me it would be much appreciated.

i keep the best and cull the rest ant that how it is saposed to be done can have this stuff getting out
i love your sarcasim it's great but i would love to run with you and ron and show ya so you can see i think your only about a hour away come on over or i can come over that way it dont matter. tank had a bad cut on his foot so it would have to be the middle of the week or some thing but i got ace i can run just dont think he would match up good with your little dogs they might spend to much time running him
Anyone have any video of said dogs ? I dont need a dog but I am always looking for better
I have med/med fast dogs and had 4 run downs, 3 this year, 1 last year, all cottontails
You can take offense, call me under educated when it comes to beagles or whatever, I just don't have rabbits that will run till a dog catches them. Our rabbits here run big and hard ask any that have come to run with me. I DO NOT claim to be an expert on beagles, just have not seen rabbits in our area run till they get winded and go down to a hound. I have seen a few caught by athletic dogs in the right place, but for a hound to just "Stiffen" one up, I have never run that rabbit. I have been running hounds for 25 plus years and I pay attention to the best of my abilities while doing so. I am so overly critical of my own hounds I second guess a lot. May be I don't have the hound power that you possess?? I still stand behind my offer, if they run them as hard as you claim then they are going to a hole here. If your dogs dig as fast as they run one then we won't need a gun!! LOL

Im with u. I have a couple dogs that catch rabbits but its because the rabbit is sitting tight in a check area.
Around here if u havnt shot that joker in 2 or 3 circles or about 30 mins or so that rabbit is going under. Ive never seen a rabbit run until its locked up or dead tired. Now during the breeding months ive seen some bucks run for a hour or better but there's no way in hell MOST beagles are gonna run them down. Them jokers will run 2-300 yards and sit until the dogs get close to them, then boom another 3-400 yard.
Im not sure if im reading chapkos right but ive never seen a pack of fast dogs run a rabbit smooth and make every swing and have no checks. Thats a superdog that ate his wheaties!! Ive seen some clean running upper medium speed dog but even still they will have a far share of check. It seems to me the faster the pack the more checks they will have!!

Hey Chapo, thought you fell off planet earth!!! After you posted about breeding papers to papers, you just vanished. You never posted back on that topic since you created, did someone make you look foolish!!??
Bunny, I agree with you again except for one small statistic.. You said, "i have 2 dogs here that have ran them down solo a few times i am talking about cottontails when looking for a fast clean hound THEY ARE HARD TO FIND FOR EVERY 20 THAT YOU FIND THAT ARE FAST 1 WILL BE CLEAN ALSO".
I would put that closer to 100 to 1. I have owned a LOT of dogs. I have had many that were fast line dogs when ran with other line dogs. But when you put them with a good #1, they seem only ordinary.
