Mybeagles, I should back up just a little..........bad start to the day. I apologize for being a prick up front. I still believe the way I do but I could have written it different than I did. No need for me to start anything up.......that's not why people get on here and read.

Plus it's my anniversary today so I better get the day going in a better direction before I take the wife out for dinner tonight. :D

Well, bunny and my beagles, maybe that is why proselytizing is such a dominant factor. It is fun. Of course, few people ever have their minds changed.

By trial, I think you mean competitive. By hunt, I think you mean use a gun and kill. By runs hounds, I think you mean a guy like me that just takes them out, trains them and tries to get the best dog he can. I never kill anything. The excitement of the chase is all I care about. If I want food, I buy it at the supermarket. I also like to run with anyone in the area to compare my dogs with theirs. The social aspect is also important but my dogs must compete with each other every night. The losers are culled on a regular basis.

If friends want to kill rabbits, I will go with them but taking life is not my main goal. They can kill all the want. They can even borrow my dogs to do so if they choose since I cannot get up early enough to hunt with most people. I tell the young folks around here to just come and take what they want and kill all they want. That way, they don't have to go to the expense of keeping dogs. Works out pretty well

But I'm willing to bet you would take a little personal offense if someone made a comment like trialers are only wannabe's that spend all their time going to and from trials just to try to get their dog a title so they can pound their chest and sell pups at a higher price. You'd be back on here telling them all about why trialing is important to you and if they've got such a good dog to bring it on over. That statement is about as ignorant as your hunter reason #3.

You would loose this bet. My best running partner is 80 years old and hates every aspect of trialing. I have never been one to let others influence what I like to do. We laugh when he gets carried away bashing the trialers.

I think there are pro's and con's to all three that's why I do them all. I would estimate 90% of my efforts are just running the hounds, a camp fire, my 4 kids and some hot dogs and marshmellows. With 4 kids, and 7 and 8 year old boys that can't wait to be old enough to shoot a gun, Im sure my percentages will favor the gun hunts in a couple years.

I am by nature very competative, so I like the idea of trials and competition. I accept that trialing is not for everyone as stated in my original post. If I had more time I would do more of it. There are plenty of very knowledgable beaglers at the trials who have taught me many things over the years. Some of them are very humble, modest guys that just love dogs. The "chest beaters" are quickly spotted and easy to avoid.

Bunnyblaster, I accept the apology. You were starting to show signs of one of the guys needing counseling. Im sure if you ask Ron Conroe he will tell you I love the sport and that I might be slightly smarter than your 5 year old but we would have to have a field trial to prove it!

:check: .........and who knows, maybe we'll run into each other sometime and run some dogs too. Doesn't Ron come down to run with you guys once in a while?

Bunny/Rose City: I am going to Harrison in a week or so if all goes well. Plan to run the shoes all night and day. Rules are have a good time and whatever quits goes in the box and never comes back out. Last one in, wins. Some boys from down south are coming too. Sounds competitive but it isn't. Mainly, just some good ol boys getting together to talk trash and listen to them run. I'll keep you posted if you are interested. There are no kind of running rules other than the dogs must not yield. There will be pedigrees and grade dogs and everything in between. Sometimes there is some buying, selling, and trading also.

Bob,

The Army still has me stationed over in Korea. I should be home in May. When I start going through "beagle withdrawls" I log on here to get verbally abused for a while, until its not funny anymore then I go play with my worthless Shitz su and pretend he is a FC beagle..... :P

I own a home in northern MI, but its looking like I will be going to Ft. Eustis, VA when I come back.

We used to do exactly what you are talking about Bob, run all night and into the day with 3-4 guys. I had a little female that would start at 7 pm and run till 10 or 11 the next morning. When the guys showed up at 5 am and dropped fresh dogs should would run with them till the running petered out....

Night running is the best as long as you have proven dogs that are trash proof, and not out there running wild, barking all over the woods. If a guys dogs have never run at night it may take a couple trips for them to adapt. Unfortunately I have had a few guys travel 4-5 hour drive only to find out there dogs wouldnt leave the shadow of the camp fire. For anyone that plans to make such a trip ensure you do a couple night runs to make sure your dogs are comfortable with it.

Have fun and let us know how it turns out. I like to hear about the dogs that stay out to the end....., pedigree, running style, size, families of dogs that do the same thing
