If you don't mind coming up to Michigan around here you don't need a permit or anything. They are nuisance animals and farmers and some local landowners will let you hunt them. I personally haven't hunted them so I don't have that much info for you, but it was so bad a year ago or so the local news did a story about peoples gardens getting rutted up and crops being destroyed. Like I said I don't have too much info but it may be something to think about.

How far into Ohio have you guys been seeing hogs I live roughly in central Ohio and haven't come across any yet. I'm just curious if they are far from here or maybe they just don't like my area.

yes he was hog hunting...and it touches the scales at 350lbs. they had been baiting for them for almost a month... and put on a drive and shot him... you can hunt them with any means you want in ohio (meaning any caliber) odnr wants them gone....and you dont need permits either..

ive seen my fair share... last year when going to physical therapy for a shoulder surgery in june i passed by a spot i coyote hunt and seen a litter of about 10-12 little ones feeding on the side of the road at 930 am... the next weekend i watched two amish guys shoot 2 of them from the bridge close by....

gallia county has more then enough and they are littered around the government land. dont think for a second though that your just going to sneak in and kill one, these things use the wind and can really smell you coming and they are smart too.
we typically kill 1-2 during gun season while putting on drives.. we've done this for the past 6-7 years. the biggest one we've killed though only went 250lbs. last year a buddy killed one that topped the scales at over 400lbs on 273 going toward oakhill hunting with a group of other guys the last weekend of gun season.... it was huge..

zelaski has them bad too. we get together every fall atleast twice to coyote hunt (guys from a predator forum) and we see them just about everytime we go into hunt , someone sees some... but i couldnt begin to tell you where to start up there hunting them...

gallia county though i can show you all the nooks and crannies and tons of government...

I've heard from several people that if you want to enjoy eating the meat you need to shoot the smaller ones. $175 or smaller for sores, and $150 or smaller for bores. What truth is there to this?

Hey Bluecollar, are you talking about the Government land out toward Scottown or up behind Crown City? They might even be one and the same. I live in Crown City and have seen a few tracks out in the old Strip Mines. We were out there last year and seen where they had been "Rooting". We used to hunt them in Logan and Mingo County in West Virginia. they used to have a Late season that usually started the day after Christmas and lasted for 4 days. They changed the seasons, not sure, but i think they done away with the late year season.

beagle mike, no im talking about the government land up 141 going toward rio grande... you come to a stop sign on 141 and you can turn on 233 to the left to go to oak hill or turn right and head to gallipolis... as soon as you turn right toward gallipolis there is a road to the left that will take you out to hundreds of acres of wayne national forest land... the big pig in the pic was killed out there and my family owns a few hundred acres in the cadmus area and that is where we have killed the majority of ours...
mike, the first pig i ever seen killed in ohio was about 15 years ago just outside of mercerville behind the south gallia high school... it weighed about 200 lbs and stunk so bad.. it was killed on thanksgiving day trying to get into a buddy of mines pig lot where some of the sows must of been coming fresh.... guys name was tim watson...

and yes.. on the weight thing... granted im not pig expert... ive never shot one myself but the ones ive been around and eat... the smaller ones are for sure better eating. my wifes family killed a 80lb one 3 years ago and had it cut up and it was actually pretty good....... they butchered that big one and had it at the wild game dinner this year and to be honest i didnt really care for it.. but to each his own i guess..

How many pounds on average would a wild 3 yr old pig be?

Ive cooked a many of wild hogs, sows and bo, from 50 lbs to 300 lbs, first and most prepare the meat properly (cleaning). I would say this about the myth of a large hog not tasting good, the reason its not eatable is because of the cook not the hog, the diet of the hog could have a bearing on the taste but not usually the case.

I've heard an un-castrated hog once they reach maturity starts getting a real musky/pungent take to its meat. I've heard the same thing about sows once they get 150 to 175 pounds. I've heard this also from hog farmer up here in Indiana.

most wild hogs start breeding in the first year, so that would elimated 90% of the male hogs in the wild
