Re: Cherry eye
If you cut out the cherry on your own, do it when the pup is still small. I waited till my dog was big enough where he just plain wriggled around too much even with someone else to hold him. I had a vet cut it out eventually.... Cutting it out is way cheaper than the procedure of tacking it back in place. The vet didn't remove the whole thing, but enough that the rest went back in after a week or so and it looks great now

Re: Cherry eye
As others have said:
Cherry eye is definitely hereditary, so you should really think twice about ever breeding a dog who has had one. It's a big problem in beagles because people basically ignore this advice.
If the cherry eye is cut out, you run the risk of a dry eye in the future which will require eye drops. The proper way to treat a cherry eye is to have a vet do the tack down procedure, which puts the tear glad back into place and will not result in dry eye.
But the best way to treat cherry eye is not to produce them in the first place.

Hwy Hillgilly,
Thanks for the info,I don`t recall any conversation about her haveing cherry eye, I was undesided because of the outcross
went ahead and bought her, all she will do is pass every thing wrong with her to her offsprtng, guess that pretty much settles the breeding part.
Thanks

Re: Cherry eye
I had a red and white female that had a cherry eye . I had several friends that offered to cut it out. I guess it was wrong, but I left it alone. I bred her many times and still have a couple of dogs from her . None of them have had a cherry eye. She died this spring,if she had lived until the last of May , she would have been 14 years old , missed it by two weeks. I even ran her in the pen to help start some pups back during the winter..I never thought about it being such an awful thing. I do know most of my dogs are lemon and white or red and white ..

Re: Cherry eye
Thanks to all. The Cherry eye was an infection , was was treated and was cured with cordazone. Robert Grimes from Ala. was here and he said he felt a 6 year old dog was too old to have Cherry Eye. He was right. Robert was running a big job out here and found me because of the Beagles. I sure enjoyed his visits and was fun to have a "a good ole boy" to talk dogs with. My Grandson now calls me," Mr. Jack."
