Corn futures are down around $4, but the corn the feed supliers are using still cost them $6 - $ 7. The main problem is the amount of corn piled up in parts of the midwest with the government subsidies paying them to let it rot. Ethanol plants are closing, which means there is less demand for corn. Next year 35% less corn is to be planted than this year. With fuel and fertilizer prices being so high, it is not profitable to raise corn anymore. Peas, Beans, and some small grains are also going to come up short this spring. Get your garden seeds early and get ready for a 5% increase in feed. JMO
They are still building and opening new Ethenol plants here in Missouri. And the dog food company's down here are not still paying $6-$7 a bushel, as a matter of fact they are getting it cheaper than the farmers($4.05 delivered), due to the quantity they use. We have a record corn crop this year allot of guys getting 180-200 bushel to the acre. You are right the acerage planted is definately gong to be down next year, but I don't think it will be 35%. You are also right about the fertilizer, man I can't hardly justify fertilizing my pasture ground anymore.

i was feeding diamond hi-energy 24/20 year round and loved it was giving 18.00 per bag then all of a sudden my dogs started having vary lose stool almost the runs out of 12 dogs 1 or 2 every week different ones of course i took them to the vet and no worms did not find nothing wrong so i decided it must be the feed and sense it went to 25.50 per bag.i swapped to what a buddy feeds his dogs (river bend) 26/18 my dogs look better and last longer and i only spend 16.30 per bag 50# and no more lose stool and that happened immediately after i swapped.

What's the points deal?
you get 8 points per pound on hi-pro, dog chow. after 7000 points i think :?: then they send you 10 7.00 rebate checks you get 500 points when you join.
Oh well, looks like I don't use enough feed for that program. I only feed 4 hounds and they require 5 hounds and at least 1 litter a year. Thanks for the info

We just paid $5.85 today for corn delivered to our mill in Va. We use about 4 truck loads a week, not alot compared to some big mills. Here is what Midwest Grain Processors board chairman Dave Nelson had to say on Agriculture.com :

"We're going to see a lot more [plants close], especially plants built in the wrong place. Probably the next batch that is going to have trouble is the newly started plants where they're going to be undercapitalized," Nelson says. "Ninety-nine percent of the ethanol plants started in the last 10 years have been undercapitalized.
"I think today, one fourth of the industry is in deep jeopardy. Some have just plain run out of cash," he adds.
Pratt, Kansas-based Gateway Ethanol, LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week.
"Ethanol producers are the first segment hit with losses. Many of the facilities will stop production, either temporarily or permanently," he says. "This softens the demand for corn and corn prices decline."
"Declining corn prices transfer the losses to farmers. With corn prices plummeting below breakeven levels, substantial losses are incurred by farmers," he says. "Government price support mechanisms are of little value because, during the ethanol boom, corn breakeven prices moved significantly higher and are above the support mechanisms."
If the trend continues, there is an upside for farmers: Input costs could go down. "Farmer losses will soften the demand for production inputs and cropland. Production input prices will decline and tighten the margins for suppliers," Hofstrand says. "More importantly, cropland rental rates will be forced down over time. However, these adjustments will not occur immediately. They will occur gradually, imposing substantial losses on farm operators in the meantime."
So, the ethanol industry -- like the economy in general -- is facing pretty grim circumstances.

the 27-16 is doing my dogs great..firm stool..and i am feeding less than dog chow. the coats are super shiny.i got a comment on the bench judge at the little world about his coat..he got 2nd best male on the bench. I am satified with it..I don't think there is a better feed for the money. they also have a 24-20 I think that is really good. These is the ESP feed
ESP= Energy Speed Performance
I have fed it all..like I said for the money you can't beat it..super nice folks there too. They have all the test results on digestibilty..protein.all that..and they will even give you a tour of the plant. Try a bag or 2 of it..I think you will be suprised.

tiffinis wrote:I cant feed a corn based food. The food I have been feeding for years with excellent results Royal Canin's Sensible Choice chicken and rice has gone from $30 for a 40 lb bag to $50 for a 40lb bag and I got a letter from the company yesterday telling me they are stopping the breeders program which was buy 10 bags get one free. Now with this food you feed the dogs a lot less and it did well in the budget and in the dogs. Now for the first time, I too am looking for another option, however without being able to use corn, I am limited...

What about Healthwise? It's made my Natura (they make Innova/CA Natural & those Old Mother Hubbard biscuits) and is about $35 for 40lbs. It's a bland food compared to Innova. Only grains used are oatmeal/brown rice. The regular adult feed is a 25/15 formula but if I'm not running them more than a few times weekly I can feed it year round as it's 408 kcals per cup. This is a feed that really stays with them. They also make a 30/20 formula but I think it's a few dollars more than the adult feed in the green bag.

There is no breeder program and that's the only drawback but it's a good feed. I have been using it for about 3-4 years now.

Here is the review of the Diamond most folks are feeding. $25.00 for a 40lb bag.
No corn, by-products, wheat, etc.
