Help!!!!! (Dog looks like she ate a basketball) !!!! Updated

Post by good-dog »

Hi
Has anyone ever seen this before
Friend of mine has a female 10 yrs old, she has swollen right up, her stomach is as big and hard as a basketball,( no kidding :???: ) also she has not been around any males at all.
She seems to be in no pain, she eats, drinks and poops fine, seems happy ( but looks like she is going to blow-up )
I asked him, how long has she been like this ,he said 4 days.
I told him to take her to the vet, as it don't seem right. to me.
Any help or advise Thanks. Felicio :check:

She needs to see a vet Immediately! It could be a number of things. At least get her looked at.

Bloat is extremely painful and they don't eat or drink. Bloat would kill her and you'd know it if it was that. Tumors can grow HUGE and I'm thinking that she could have something like that going on. If your concerned though I sure would let a vet take a look.

I seen another hound that looked as you discribed, but she was full of dead pups.
I had some young hound swell up tight, but they had got in the feed bin and gourged on ground feed of the cattle.

Soory for the late reply
My friend took her in to the vet on monday at 8:00 am and left for work.
He got a call from the vet at 9:10 am, that she did not make it, she died while they were operating on her
the vet said he should have brought her in sooner.
The vet said her guts were all twisted up (bloating).
Warning!!!!! if you see your dog with belly all swollen up, GET them to a vet A.S.A.P.
Thanks very much for your reply's. Take care :check: Felicio

The one time I witnessed this in a beagle the dog didn't make it that long and was dead overnight. I had seen this in larger breed dogs but this was the first time for seeing it in a beagle. This was my cousins dog that he had fed about an hour before we met to go hunting. The dogs had ran several tracks and they had went on a pretty long run when they made a loss and came back to us after awhile. I noticed this dog hunkering like he had to go but didn't actually do anything. We hunted an hour or so more and went home. When the dog got home he was lying down in the box lathargic and my cousin called saying the dog would not get up. I went over and and looked at him and he was bloated so I thought he may be constipated and gave him an enima but nothing. Tried to get him to drink and or eat that evening but he just layed there so I told my cousin to take him to the vet in the morning as this was a Sunday evening. I told him it looked like the dog was bloated and he may have twisted a gut as I had seen it in coon hounds over the years. He got up early the next morning and loaded him in the box for his wife to take to the vet and he died shortly after they got him into the vets office. The vet said that he had a twisted stomach and they normally don't live long after that happens. This one made it much longer. Needless to say we NEVER feed our dogs prior to running any more. Never ever even thought of it prior to this incident.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. it is unusual for a beagle but, of course not unheard of and most dogs die pretty quick.
