tank dogs generally would run more line control.. however tank was not a dog to get in the b ushes that much ,, put him in a scersa field and he waas a champ. the patch will tear a the briars apart. i think its a bad combo ..i;d get another patch .....

It depends on what association is running the S.P.O. trial. If it's a U.B.G.F. [United Beagle Gundog Federation] trial you will find them to be medium speed at best and quite conservative. They want and expect them to slot up and they don't give them much leeway in the check area. They want them close! I believe you'd find these trials to be more of the "Tank dog style".
If it's the Mid-West Gundog Assoc. then you can expect a pretty footy dog that can really get after it. They don't believe in a dog being too fast but they will insist on it still being on the line and working the check from the inside out.I don't see many Patch bred dogs having alot of success in this format . At least not in the published results in Better Beagling that list the Mid-West trials.

THATS ONLY CaUSE THEY R TOO FAR AWAY DANA LOL.!spo and patch wont work ...midwest ok the pup should get faster with age and experience .. however by not putting too much pressurer on it to early will help it run a better line and make it a more complete dog.

Dogs will gear up for the first three years then their speed will stabalize. I think this is due to getting better at running the rabbit with fewer breakdowns but if you don't run these hounds they may never get much foot.

Hey Brian,

After seeing some dogs run that your pup is out of, I would say that he'll finish out being pretty quick. At 6 months he's far from finished and will more than likely speed up over time and especially after being ran with other dogs. In my opinion a Tank bred dog would not be the way to go-the styles are just too different.
I don't see many Patch bred dogs having alot of success in this format . At least not in the published results in Better Beagling that list the Mid-West trials.
I would think that there are many patch bred hounds that would fit this format. I know of quite a few patch hounds that finished out to FC, our Shildt's Dusty Patch was one 1st place away when we bought him we just never took him to a trial (wish we would have looking back). Many owners of patch bred dogs use them entirely for hunting which the main reason they aren't showing up in field trial results.

Any questions feel free to PM me

I'm going to venture that your patch hound will be outrunning that tank dog before long. Patch hounds are known for being fast and the Tank bloodline are more geared towards SPO.

Not all Patchs are fast, I had a bitch SR Lilawana patch the was a med/slow hound independant to a fault but she never left the line/wouldn't pull up and was happy doing her own thing with a rabbit. I got her from Leroy Miller in Pa who had the last of Mike Yates hounds. I saw her daddy Copper, a red 14-15" saddle back tri with a good bit of ticking on his legs and her mother Emmy, a little open marked red/white 13"er.
Mike bred his hounds to compete in the early spo trials but quit when they started the style over accomplishment thing. If you get alot of later Yates into the breeding, you'll have a more med-line running hound...jmho

As others have said, Tank is considered to be a more conservative style hound. That means flat med. speed, closer to the line, closer in the check area, and dogs in the pack will slot up to run rather and push for the front. Conservative dogs are more focused on the "Line" than the "Rabbit."

Typically, when you hear people talk about med-fast or fast beagles they are talking about dogs that are running the line in an effort to catch the rabbit....also you will hear "run to catch" used to describe these type hounds. You will hear people that prefer a more conservative hound say of the faster hounds that they are "running too much rabbit." Meaning they are more focused on running the rabbit than hitting every bit of the line (scent line the rabbit leaves).

In regards to your question. Most Patch hounds are med fast to fast. Most Tank dogs are flat med. If that is the case w/ the dogs you have than no they will not be a good pair. But, when you say a dog "goes back to Tank blood" that doesn't take into consideration what other blood he has flowing through his veins. If his great grand dad was Tank, but all his other great-grandparents were a faster, harder hitting dog, then he very well will not fit the typically Tank style. Same think for the dog that has Patch blood in him.

I ran w/ a guy down in GA a few years back, that said he had "Tank" dogs. I was wondering how they would match up w/ my med-fast style dogs and they ended up running right together all day long. Curious to find out more about his dogs, I learned that Tank was way back in there somewhere, but his dogs were primarily just good ole southern grade rabbit hounds w/ a splash of Tank way back somewhere....and his dogs I can assure you were nothing like Tank....they were actually a little too loose for me.

Guess the bottom line is to evaluate each hound on an individual basis - the pedigree will help tell you what you can expect, but seeing first hand what you have in the field is what is paramont.

Hope that helps some,

Pete
