Injury to leg ?

Post by D.J. Wright »

I have a 1- 1/2 y/o male that was hurt on a run. He came out on 3 legs and his left front leg had a small puncture wound. I think he met up with a house dog on run. I got him home and clean the wound, started him on ammoxicillin. It feels like nothing is broke and all the swelling is gone, he is eating well. He is still going on 3 legs just holding it up. How long should I give before I take him to the vet? Thanks for any reply!

Is he bearing weight on it at all? you can take him to the vet for an xray but, so far you've done a good job of keeping off infection. I know that some injuries (deep bruising) can take quite a while to heal. I hurt my ankle over 2 months ago and its still sore. Does the dog cry out when you handle this leg? is it hot to the touch anywhere? He definately could have pulled something. Vet or not to vet that is the question or how many $$ do you spend ;-) If he is eating good and not in terrible pain I'd give him 1 more week. An aspirin (baby one 81mg) might help.

our BIG male Pulled a muscle in his shoulder packed his leg for almost 3 weeks. he never did act like it really hurt him unless you got it in just the right position and still he never cried out just would jerk his leg away.
took him to the vet and this is what we were told that he had pulled a major muscle and needed to be kept up for a few weeks.leah is correct deep bruising can also make em pack a leg for awhile.
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

The only time I see him put it on the ground, is if he is standing still no weight just touching the ground. He does no cry but does pull away a little when I move it around, and it does not feel hot. I forgot to mention I have been giving baby aspirin appr. 120mg daily along with ammoxicillin 250 mg 2x per day. The wound is healed and see no swelling.

Thanks for the replies, he started putting weight on it yesterday when I walked him on the lead. I am still taking it easy with him for a couple more weeks. I think he is alright.
