grey pups

grey pups
I've made this cross twice now and have had grey pups in both litters. I understand that both sire and dam are carrying the recessive gene that causes this color.
If I was to take one of the female pups back to her dad would the litter be predominately grey?

Jeremy,
The "D" gene is the gene for the blanket. A recessive d gene is the blue where the dominant D gene is the black.
A blue pup will have a double recessed gene "dd" where a black blanket beagle will have a "DD or Dd". The D is dominant so even if it pairs up with a "d", the pup will still be a black tri.
The "E" gene is what produces the blanket extension. A Lemon or red and white will have a "ee" where a tri will have either "EE or Ee.
The dd gene and the ee genes are not related, However, if it carries the following gene pattern:
atat B? C? dd Ee mm sP? tt: Tricolor (Blue blanket, dull yellow points with the recessive gene for lemon Ee)
And is bred to a hound with the Ee or ee gene, some of the pups will be lemon, but again, its a seperate code that causes this.

If Southern Beagles info is correct and I presume it is: then to answer the original question--
If the sire was Dd (black blanket) and the pup was dd (blue) then this cross should produce 50% black (Dd) and 50% blue (dd).
Dd x dd
D d
_________
d | Dd dd
|
d | Dd dd
__________
The sire can give either D or d in his sperm. the dam can only contribute d into her eggs. The outcome is predicted in the square box above--although tough to draw on a confuser!!

Yes, they would all be lemons or red and whites. You can't get a dominant gene out of two recessives.
Each pup gets one of the genes from its parent so if you have two double recessives, you can only a double recessive.
ee+ee=ee
This is why the red and whites and lemons are so common in the Patch line.
Sorry guys for getting so technical

Oh by the way,
One thing that is confusing is a lot of folks think that a chocolate, or red tri is a red and white and will mark them like that on the papers. The difference in these hounds is the blanket. Some folks call them Warfield Reds, others call them copper nose dogs. A chocolate or red tri will have a saddle or third color where a TRUE red and white or lemon will only have two colors or NO saddle; one shade of red or tan and white.

I bred two tricolor hounds and got four lemons and four tri's. There are lemons on both sides but their four and five generations back.
Dry Creek Kennel-Bred to get it done where it counts the most "under the gun".

There was a thread on here once where a poster said he got tri's from 2 lemon and whites. I don't know, but I think SB is right, that you only get lemon/white because it is recessive. But accidental breedings do happen so that might have been what caused some tricolors.
Dale I have 2 newborn male pups that are grey color and people seem to like them. I wonder if they would sell better or worse than the more common colors.
