Mange--please help!!

Post by Kelly »

I was running coyotes with some Black an Tans that a freind owns. A mangey coyote was shot and the one female had contact with the coyote and within 3 days , she had mange. The vet said injections of Ivomectin would cure but it could take a few visits. This guy isn't rolling in money and thought to put the dog down. She's 6-7 years old but a pretty fair coyote dog. She weighs 70 lbs. I told him that I give Ivermectin orally for heartworm at 1/10th cc. per 10 lbs. of body weight. I do not know how much you would use for mange and if you would have to inject or go orally. He gives his dogs rabies shots so he could give shots of ivermectin . He would prefer to give orally but could go either way.Any help would be much appreciated. CVT

He can purchase injectable Ivermectin at any local feed supply. I would give 1/10th of a CC Now and then again in 7 days and then again in 10 days just to make sure. The initial dose will kill the live mites but, if they have laid eggs those will hatch in 7-10 days.

No need to put this dog down.

Leah
PS: I would give it injected for this purpose. Its SubQ and it does sting so, the dog will probably cry out.

Are you saying just 1/10th cc total or per 10lbs of body weight? He gave the dog 2 heart worm tablets and he thought it was a little better. Thanks, CVT

Honestly.. I never measure it. Its such a safe drug. Its doesn't take much to kill mites though. Once it enters the blood stream and they injest it through a blood meal they are gonners!

I wouldn't give ivomec now if he gave the dog heartworm which contains ivomec.

I certainly do NOT recommend this! Rubbing a toxic substance on the skin is not a good idea. There are plenty of medications that are much better.

Grim, so you give 2/10thcc. per 10lbs. body weight, every day for 7 days, then give same dose on the 14th and 20th day. Right? CVT

rabbithunter is right about the oil,it does a good job.i have seen stray dogs with hardly any hair at all.and a old guy i knew would catch them and soak them in oil and a week or so you could tell a difference.just watch and when the oil starts to dry up or rub off soak them down again.i think if he keeps the dog oil good she will be as good new in a few weeks.hope this helps.

I have also used old motor oil to spot treat mange and it has always worked in a couple of applications, and have never seen any side effects.

Go to your Vet. and get a tube or Revalution for the weight of your hound and put it on the hound, this is not expensive and will do the job, one treatment.
