Sick beagle - What caused it?

Post by SilverZuk »

I have a 4 year old female that I noticed has been sick since Christmas.
Dec 23 I noticed that she was wheezing a little and wasn't performing 100%, but still ran good and hunted good.
She seemed to get better, but some days I could tell she was a little down and wheezing some.
I had her running Jan 13 and she hunted and ran fine, but her voice was hoarse. The scenting conditions were tough, and she led the pack like she always does when it gets tough.

I went to run on Jan 16 and I noticed she wasn't feeling good, so I left her.
Jan 17 she wouldn't come out of her box, just stick her head out.
Jan 18 I pulled her out of the box to check her and feed her some meat scraps. Her lymph glands behind her jaws were so swollen I had to cut her collar off. She couldn't even swallow bite sized pieces of pork chop. Her eyes were crusted from drainage.

I took her to my neighbor's kennel and he gave her a shot of antibiotic.
I fed her scrambled eggs fried in bacon grease all weekend.
Saturday she was better, but still sick and swollen.
Sunday some swelling had gone down, but the lymph glands were still hard and visibly swollen. She was eating chicken and eggs and feeling a lot better.

I checked her teeth, gums, throat, under tongue, ears, and rest of her for any signs of abscess tooth, stick in throat or under tongue, injury, or soreness. She was last wormed around Jan 1 and is up to date on all shots.

Anyone have a do this?
I have never seen a dog with swollen lymph glands like that. It looked like she had mumps.

She is still on antibiotics and improving.

Could be anything from a minor infection to cancer ... I'd keep her on antibiotics for a few more days then a vet trip is in order if she doesn't improve ...

She is improving every day and the swelling is going down.

With all that happened as you described I would have taken her to a Vet.

Wed she was feeling pretty good.
Thurs I took her out and they ran a rabbit for about 30 minutes.
I called them in because I didn't want to push her too hard.
She seems like she is back to herself.
I still have her on antibiotics until they run out saturday.
