Bald spot on a female that just whelped

My female just whelped on 12/13/06, she is losing quite a bit of hair on her sides in front of her back hips. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is she scratching or biting at herself? What is her whelping box area like? She is spending a lot of time on her side nursing puppies so, it could just be some rub spots. Are the spots red or just getting the hair rubbed off? Is she in good weight or getting thin? More info would help.

She is not biting or scratching. She has a good size whelping box with clean sheets and blankets in it everyday. She does spend alot of time laying on the side that is bald while she is nursing. It is quite red also. She was pretty thin but she is putting weight back on now.

Just a guess and I'm certainly NOT a vet but, sounds kinda like a bedsore from laying on it alot. You might try putting one of those eggcrate foam pads under the sheet or a Thick sheepskin to keep the pressure off of that sore spot. Also, keeping things dry is very important.

Are you using a cleaning agent, febreeze deodorant, disinfectant or anything like that? May be something in there that is bothering her. Could even be a detergent residue in the sheets. ???

SR Patch is right, the fancy word for it is stress effluvium (SP). That came straight from Doc S when he was on here. My hounds will frequently blow their coat after a litter of pups some worse than others, just keep feeding the dam pup chow free feed until you ween the pups.
