Next Best Qualified; if for some reason a hound that placed higher than the NBQ hound(5th) is disqualified the NBQ hound will be moved up & receive points toward it's FC title. This is what I've always been told anyway; I don't know all of the specifics about this.

Greg-
I just found this out for sure a few weekends ago when a dog I judged placed 4th and was DQ'd for being collared wrong....NBQ is not considered a "placing hound" in AKC's eyes therefore it can't move up and recieves 0 points. However, a club is required to provide ribbons for 1st-NBQ....I do not fully understand that...but anyhow, it is what it is.
To me....a NBQ ribbon is proof to the wife and kids that you were actually at a trial that weekend and was "that close" to winning ...thus providing reason to go the following weekend;)

If that's the case, why do they even have an NBQ hound? If they don't want a hound that can move up in case of a disqualified placing hound, they should either call it 5th place & give points or do away with the green ribbon. It makes no sense not to give points to the 5th place hound in my opinion now.

Greg-
I have been refreshing up on the AKC rule book this morning because this had me wondering....however, it is in there
Procedure 4.Judging
4-B "N.B.Q. is not a place and in case of disqualification of a placed hound at a licensed or member trial, the N.B.Q. hound shall not be moved up"

NBQ has been under discussion for years in AKC trials, has been
brought up for either elimination or meant to mean what it indicates
quite a lot at the Beagle Advisory meeting of AKC always has been
voted down for some ungodly reason
Makes one wonder about the delegates that sit on that committee
it seems every one in the beagle world wants it to mean what it
indicates except the powers that represent us at AKC
