AT THE LIL WORLD THIS YEAR,FRED HAUSMAN ANOUNCED THAT NKC IS LOOKIN INTO STARTING A NEW OVER 15 IN CLASS FOR ARHA LP.THIS IS A TOPIC THAT YEAH,HAS BEEN RAN INTO THE DIRT,BUT FACT IS,THERE ARE SOME NICE HOUNDS OUT THERE THAT EITHER DONT GET TRIALED,ARE SNUCK INTO HUNTS WORRYING ABOUT MEASUREMENTS.YEAH,I HAVE A COUPLE HEFTY YOUNG LADS THAT ARE PUSHIN THE POST,BUT,MOST OF THEM ARE RIGHT AT 15,BUT I HAVE SEEN SO MANY MOH'S AT THESE HUNTS PROP THE DOGS UP,ONE LOOKS LIKE HE IS GETTIN THE DOG READY FOR THE BENCH SHOW,AND ANOTHER THIG I HATE IS I WATCH SO MANY GUYS,DROP THE BAR DOWN TO WHERE IT RESTS ON TOP OF THE DOGS HAIR,I HAVE ONE DOG,AND I AM SURE MANY OTHER DO TOO,THAT HAS 3/4 IN OR MORE HARE ON ITS SHOULDER,THE RULES SAY.....TO THE WITHERS. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A TOPIC THAT MAY NEVER BE RESOLVED TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY,BUT,I KINDA LIKE THE IDEA OF A OVER 15 CLASS,BUT THEN,IF THE ARE AGREEING THAT THE DOG OVER 15 IN, IS A BEAGLE,THEN WHY CANT HE RUN WITH THE OTHER BEAGLES?

I believe dogs are growing bigger due to proper nutrition and better breeding programs. This is no different than the average height or lifespan of humans changing throughout the years. With more study on nutrition and genetics come bigger, stronger, faster dogs. The dogs shouldnt be penalized for reaching their full potential. If dogs were still fed scraps from their owners tables and bred to whatever dog showed up when they came in heat as they were years ago we wouldnt be seeing the athletic animals that we do today. I say it is time to move the standard to reflect the changes in dogs of today and dogs of the future.

Are they really bigger because of proper nutrition and such? I would venture to say that they are bigger because people have tried to get every inch out of them that they can to help at trials. Guys have been trying to get more speed so therefore they have been trying to get longer legged hounds. There were height restrictions put in place to try to ensure that the beagle maintains standards set forth many years ago. I personally think that as soon as there is no height limit you'll have people breeding beagles with coonhounds to produce taller dogs. I think that it is best to stick with 15" maximum. JMO

OVER 15" CLASS????? Is Del Morgan going to start his own breed standard now??? WHAT A JOKE! Teach people how to measure a dog and send the ones that are over 15" HOME!
Whats next???? How about starting a class for males with only one testicle?

well I think some sizes are due to genetics and some people just don't properly care for their hounds but that's just my opinion . I do think we should stick with the standard and not above 16 .

Stay with 15 and send the oversized home. Once we allow 16's in the 17" owners will b!!ch. Its has to stop somewhere.

IF YA KEEP IT 15,ELECT THREE REPS FROM EACH STATE,THEN,HAVE ANY THREE REPS MEASURE THE DOG,NOW,HERE COMES THE HARD PART,TEACH THESE GUYS,HOW TO MEASURE A DOG,I HAVE NEVER,EVER SEEN A DOG OUT IN THE FIELD STAND ON ITS TIPPY TOES,HEAD UP,LIKE A DANG BENCH DOG,WALK THE DOG UNDER THE STAND,DON'T PUT YOUR HAND UNDER ITS CHEST AND LIFT,WALK IT UNDER,TAKE YOUR HANDS AND POSSITION BOTH FRONT PAWS SQARE UNDER THE DOG,PUT THE DOGS HEAD STRAIGHT OUT OR DOWN,NOT UP,DROP THE BAR,PUSH THE BAR THROUGH THE THICK FUR .........DOWN TO THE WITHERS!!!!!IF THE DOG HUNKERS,SO BE IT,LET THE DOG STAND NATURAL,SO MANY TIMES I SEE THESE LP MOH'S MEASURE DOGS,THE FIRST THING THEY DO IS STICK THEIR DANG HAND UNDER THE CHEAST AND LIFT THAT DOG UP ONTO ITS TIPPY TOES  IF THAT DOG STOOG LIKE THAT NATURAL,FINE BUT YOU CAN TAKE A 14 INCH DOG,PROP IT UP REAL NICE LIKE A BENCH DOG,DROP THE BAR AND LET IT REST ONTOP THE FUR LIKE I HAVE SEEN SO MANY DO AND THEN THAT 14 INCH DOG IS SUDDENLY 15 TO 15 1/4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOME OF THESE DOGS ARE FROM UP NORTH AND HAVE THAT THICK HARE HOUND FUR,HECK,IT IS 3/4 TO AN INCH THICK,DRIVE THAT BAR TO THE WITHERS LIKE THE RULEBOOK SAYS.

IF THEY WOULD ADOPT AN OFFICIAL STAND,AND AN OFFICIAL WAY TO MEASURE,THEN MAYBE INSTATE AN OFFICIAL MEASUREMENT RULE,THE COMPITITION WOULD BE AWESOME,I SEE SO MANY GUYS IN LP THAT WILL TURN DOWN OR SELL A NICE DOG CAUSE IT IS RIGHT THERE AT 15 IN CAUSE THEY HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MEASURING,ELECT SOME FAIR HONEST PEOPLE,SET AN OFFICIAL WAY TO MEASURE,AND IF THEY MEASURE IT OUT TWICE ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT,BLACKBALL IT.FIND ANOTHER ONE,BUT IF YOU GET TWO TO THE GOOD,IT IS IN,LEAVE THE DOG AND THE GUY ALONE

HEY,HERE IS HOW TO REALLY MAKE THE IDEA PASS,TELL NKC THEY CAN CHARGE US 20 OR 30 BUCKS TO OFFICIAL MEASURE A DOG AND YOUR IN THERE,CHAAAAAACHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IF IT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR AKC,UKC,THEN WHY NOT ARHA????????

I don't think that just because of the size is going to matter that much. I have seen small dogs smoke big ones. I say run what you bring!!!

I think that breeding for a bigger faster hound is a big problem . but in college we studied genetics and life span and in the past 60 years the average male height has raised from 5'7" to 5'10" and the white american male's life expectancy has jumped from 65 to 78 . It is mainly due to the advances in medicine and nutrition . I think that alot of this is pasted on to the hounds through medicine and feed . I have no problem with a class over 15 inches , if I don't like it I won't participate in it but it would cut down on alot of dogs being dropped at the pound or set out on the side of the road . Everyone says that they can just go as gun dogs but we all know that isn't always the case . The ARHA is not a purebred registry so I don't see the problem with a dog over 15 inches I know of several champion and grand champions that are mixed with fiest yet they still run in lp and are Nkc registered.
