[quote="Alabama John"]I don't believe any cottontail rabbit can run for an hour with a real pushing dog with any speed after it.
WHAT????YOU MEAN YOU HAVE NEVER HAD A DOG GOOD ENOUGH TO RUN A RABBIT FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES??.....EVER???

LOl, good point!!!
Raised pups many times that turned out to not be as fast running and ran more like SPO dogs I've seen around here. They could run one for a much longer time than an hour and were sure fun to watch and hear. The men I let have them like them fine.
In lots of Little Pack one hour cast, I've seen the 4 dogs catch several in the hour. Really that is not too big a deal if you're used to faster running dogs. In Big Pack it is understandably normal. See above post about Ohio trial.
Fast dogs out of shape do run a rabbit longer in the afternoon than they did those that morning.
My point is a slower dog pack will run a lone, single rabbit for a longer time than a fast pack. The slower the dog, the longer time a rabbit can stand its "pressure".
A fast pack will usually pick up the rabbit in 30 minutes or less. I stand by that here where we run and hunt. Sometimes they will seem to have a shut down and when they start running again you might think it was just a long check. It usually means they caught one and have jumped another and a person might think they ran that original one for over an hour.
Good quick answer though. Thanks for the laugh!!!

i guess i see your point if you like slower line control dogs.to each his own.any body can grab 4 or 5 dogs and go running and see that at most trials.but to watch a rabbit truly running and have a pack of 50 right on its arse roaring its a sight to see something you wont see every day and to see it for 4 hours straighteddywilliams wrote:Makes no sense to me turning that many dogs loose at once ,the rabbit stands no chance at all ,how much line control can you have with this ? Its not for me
