i have to agree, with you scott. i went to one akc trail, everybody spread out, jumped on brushpiles, and hit the weeds with sticks.whats that all about?i thought thats why we own beagles,to find us rabbits.then my dog got picked up, for running too much rabbit

Re: who promotes the best all around RABBIT DAWG?????
It must not have been a Midwest Trial trial if you got picked up for running too much rabbit. Maybe the judge was just not saying what he really picked you up for if it was the Midwest. He just said that.

is it mjust me or is everyone else noticing a trend here????????????????????
"i went to one akc trial"
seems like 99% of the guys badmouthing akc have all been to one or maybe two trials and now they are experts

see guys,in akc,two judges have to judge all the dogs, and on some days, rabbits sit tight and people moving about kickin the brush halps get the show on the road, plus, when i rabbit hunt,i dont sit around with my buddies and wait for the dogs to jump one,i walk with them and we spread out ,we kick the brush, talk to the dogs and jump rabbits, dont you all do the same?

Re: who promotes the best all around RABBIT DAWG?????
Everyone who rabbit hunts loves a true jump dog. I can remember years ago I got my first beagle at the age of 14. It was a grade dog and she was a rabbit jumping machine. However, not only did she have a knack for jumping rabbits she could run to catch! So a true rabbit dog will search and have an uncanny ability to jump and track that rabbit to catch accurately.
Guys let's tell it like it is, all formats we run in have their issues. There isn't a format out there that is perfect but as owners of beagles we must choose what best fits the type of beagle we like. With that said, when I go to the field to put meat on the table that is my only goal. I could careless how the dogs persue the rabbit (obviously I enjoy seeing it done right) as long as they bring it back to the gun for meat! Is it true that judges in AKC will ask handlers to work there hound to jump a rabbit? Yes! Does this mean that we are not concentrating on how hard each hound is hunting! NO! But since some of you ARHA guys are bashing AKC and not vice versa. I will be the first to bash ARHA! Have I judged an ARHA trial? Yes! I admit it was along time ago but the rules haven't changed that much if at all since then. It is absolutely crazy to expect a hunter to hunt a hound without giving commands. To not be able to talk to your hound is unrealeastic and if you disagree I will never hunt with you. When I turn my hounds loose I encouraged them to hunt at all times (isn't this part of handling) and I want to help them play in the game they enjoy the most persuing that rabbit to catch. If this means I have to kick a few brushpiles, walk into a thicket that I can reach deep enough to jump a rabbit I will. Again I love a jump dog but how many times have you been able to bring meat to the table on a jump? How much meat have you been able to bring to the table after a good race? So a good jump dog without the ability to track a rabbit long enough to bring meat to the table is useless and a dog that will not hunt even with encouragment is useless as well! And there are examples of these dogs in "ALL FORMATS." If you as a hunter walk paths, you are one of two things old as hell (no direspect to the old guys) or lazy as hell. Hunt with your dogs and be part of the challenge! Otherwise be lazy and stay at home! There are dogs in ARHA and AKC that will not hunt. Both, eventually in a trial will go to the truck! There are dogs in ARHA and AKC that have no clue how to accurately run a rabbit with a run to catch attitude! The differeces is in ARHA these dogs stay down and become "Champions!" In AKC these dogs take the walk of shame and head to the truck for disrupting the pack!
Again a true RABBIT DOG! Will win everytime no matter the format! Better the Breed or take the walk of shame!

wow,now that thar is a dang good post,i couldnt have said it better, and your right,i have seen dogs in arha that couldnt run a rabbit to save their life but they swarp in an get checks that they actually make by disrupting the race and people love theese dogs and why, cauuse they can win in arha dn they earn a lp champion or grand champion certificate, well, you take that ssame dog out by itself and try to hunt for food and you will prolly starve to death before the bawstard can get the rabbit circled to ya cause they dont run the rabbit, they run the rabbit, they run the pack, now, there are some good dogs in arha, dont get me wrong but there ar some that i wouldnt feed or take the time to shoot and they are called champions,i tried a female out oce to buy back before i really knew what l liked, shure, she is a big name dog,her sister won the world hunt and is a hall of fame dog,and they run alike, they run the track about a 1/4 of the time if thet, most the time they just run along the outside waitin for the pack to break down, then they swawp in,get the check and then when a lil preasure gets on them there she went again, bacl to swingin,it didnt take me long to realize i didnt want that, give me a true brush bustin line runnin rabbit dawg and i will show ya a dog that can win and finsh in any format anyday, now that is a true rabbit hound...............

Down here in the swamps you walk the edges of the water and the dogs get in it to find the rabbits on tree stumps or around tree roots surrounded by water, or under water cut dirt banks next to the water. We walk the edges and if a dog doesn't get in there and swim while hunting, its gone to someone that hunts only cottontails. Old, but not lazy!
You helping them find a rabbit would be interesting to watch when you waded around and hit a deep pocket when its cold. We'd all laugh at you standing naked by a big fire we build quickly to dry your clothes and warm you up!!!!
If a dog needs me to jump a rabbit, I don't need it.

very well put ridge view. I agree with you 100%
Re: who promotes the best all around RABBIT DAWG?????
those that can run in akc, know its the best dog, those that have dogs that get picked up there have to go to the other places.
jmo
one thing for sure,at least those that have grade hounds can compete somewhere, not in akc.
i didnt read all the pages and posts, but maybe they should get the feild champions from mid-west spo run against the ukc hbc,and even invite the littlepack/progressive pack champions and run trios----1 ukc/1 akc1/1 arha hound.run them for 4 hours and keep results.the handlers after hearing eachothers reasons for scoreing/good houndwork/spped drive check/clean running style, should either beat the pee outta one another or come to a honest conclusion of which regisitry had the best dogs down on that day.
my money is on the akc
one reason the brush beaters of the akc do it is because of time restrictions.they want the most running available for the judges to see the hounds.in ukc/arha they may not find a rabbit in thier 60/90/120 minute cast and be judged on just a few losses of the line.the last 2 akc trails i was at the dogs were out till dark---not done at noon like little pack i was at.
try a large pack hunt if you think yours runs to much rabbit, lmao, man is it great
a good dog can win in any registery.otherwise becuase of a faulty dog you may have to choose where ya race at.

Re: who promotes the best all around RABBIT DAWG?????
Alabama John, I might be wrong here but I think a HUGE majority of rabbit hunting is not done in swamp country so I would say you're the exception and not the rule. Again here I say, quit being lazy and be part of the action if you want table fare!!!!!
By the way, I thought someone here would be smart, (or SMARTAZZ), enough to create a smilie face beating a dead horse here. Where are you?????

Hey Chief
I'm not smart enough to figure out how to put a smiley face on here or I would have. Or, maybe I'm too LAZY!!!
I just thought that part of his post was funny. Made my sons smile. Meant no disrespect.
When we hunt in serica and blackberry fields, we have some young full of pep folks also that like to get in the thick along with the dogs, we'll even sic them in like dogs. but they wouldn't know if they jumped a rabbit or not until a dog came by and started opening in front of them. All the brush busters do is enjoy tearing up their clothes and themselves and run rabbits out to us that are standing in the open.
After a while they figure it out and realize its like the smart pills we use to educate all young hunters.
I'm in Alabama between the Mulberry, Cahaba, and the Locust Fork Rivers.

Alabama John,
No disrepect seen. I've hunted rabbits in many different States and found very few areas that I coundn't walk through. I do understand your situation though. Sometimes you need a dog with a lot of hunt or it's gonna be a long day.
As far as finding the smilie face, it's amazing what one does to pass time while laidoff.
