MAB Derby Rules
Now i'm kinda new to trialing and want to get started this year to see which format my hounds are suited for. A friend of mine has invited me to a Mid American Beagle Derby this weekend. Now i would like to know alittle about how they judge your hounds and what the judges are looking at. I know there is a age limit and some of the odds and ends, but a buddy of mine said he ran in the same club and his hound swung 10 yrds and they told him to pick up his hound. Is this true?
Like i said i have never run in SPO before but i would like to know alittle bit of what to expect of the judges requirements and how the hounds will be judged or alittle about the rules.
I have read the rules of the AKC but man do they make it confusing and do they ever leave it open for many interpritations.
Not trying to set off any bombs but would just like to get some serious input from people with experiance in this format.
Thanks
Donnie

Donnie, I know just a little about MAB trials. You cannot lump every federation that runs under the SPO (Small Pack Option) format in the same bowl. Varying federations may all run SPO formats but they are judged very differently. Unless MAB has changed the style of dog they used to run, I dont see your dogs staying on the ground very long knowing how they are bred! Most MAB dogs I have personally seen are alot like UBGF dogs, flat medium speed, very close on the line, NO swinging or over-competitiveness.........fast dogs wont stay down very long I would suppose. If you wanna take in a AKC trial in the SOP format, I would suggest taking in a Mid-West SPO trial...I think your style of dogs would fit in much better there.

With the breeding of the dogs in your kennel you should run AKC Mid West SPO, ARHA Little Pack, or UKC. YOur dogs will be picked up in a NY minute at most SPO hunts in ubgf or other federations that run conservative hound.

Hey Donnie,
How are ya? Hows the ecollar working?
I can help you out with the rules. I've judged 3 M.A.B. trials this year. I love M.A.B. derby trials. So far I've had the most fun at those.
Give me a call at 270-797-3244 after 3:30pm or private message me your phone number and I can give you a call. To much to the rules for me to type it all. I'm afraid I might get confusing LOL.

Guy's all your info is correct. I talked to the president and he told me the rules and the format that they are running and my hounds are not fitted for this type of format. Very tight line and down, not any swing hardly at all and not much speed. Mostly straight line trotters, not to say anything bad just his explanation to me on what they were looking for in the hounds they were judging, and i know my hounds as big dog put it would be picked up in a NY minute.
Thanks for all the info guy's you have been alot of help.Maybe i can catch a Arha trial close by and see how the hounds do.
Hey Chad i will shoot you a pm i need to discuss some more stuff with ya anyway.Oh buy the way the collars are great man i love them. No regrets on spending the money for them and a very good price. Only one problem i just don't use them much anymore.LOL But that's a good thing.

Bopeye,
get off at exit 68 & follow signs that say ARHA it is easy to find.
I will not be running Boss Man, I don't run hounds at my home club hunts. I am Master of hounds & judge every round & my brother is judge & cousin is judge & my hunting buddy is judge. If I lucked up & won (which ain't likely) it might look like home cooking so I don't even put myself in that position. If weather is pretty good my kids will be showing something, they love the bench show, my boy is 5 & his last winning bench trophy, he slept with ,for a week. We draw door prizes of dog feed & caps & will treat you right, can't promise noone will tell you a biggun but consider the crowd, especially if that Tazewell Dalton gang shows up.
If you boys want some of Boss Man & Dolly I will be glad to come down to your honey hole one Friday or Saturday morning & let you outrun me but you won't out BS me.
Hope to see you boys there,
PLowboy

You've got to be kidding me. My pups wouldn't stand a chance against Boss Man, I've heard a lot of good things about that little hoss.
Now for you being able to out BS me, well we'll just see next saturday.

Ok now sounds like ol dogtrader59...ooooops. i mean bowhunter59 is calling me out. now why you go and do a thing like that i thought you was one of the pals. Plus i don't have anything but peanut pushers in my pens so i have to at least kinda get them prepared for a trial, ya see i had to least give them another year over the gun to mature and prove themselfs, even if they don't do any good when we get thereand this is the first trial close i have been invited to, and don't have alot of funds to get to them far away trials at $2.00 gal.Do ya think you might take up a love offering up for me at your local church so i can go to more 59.LOL
No really i hope to go if not i will have at least 1 hound there with my handler and he is one tuff cookie, so you guy's be nice to him if i can't make it. and show him the ropes and not the end of one, if you know what i mean, cause he really wanted to trial from the get go, so help him out if i'm not there. He is my oldest son and a pretty good ol feller even when you rib him like ya do me.
