UNO is a great dog for the picture books but I doubt he could run a rabbit. Im not even sure he would even know what a rabbit even is. . . Way to spoiled :bash:

UH YES T C TO ME IT MATTERS IF A BEAGLE RUNS A RABBIT OR NOT !if it cant then its just a mutt. maybe a pretty to look at mut but amutt all the same ....not saying all dogs thaty show are mutts dont get me wrong but beagles were meant to run rabbits .so if they r and they dont then hhhmmm===cull.!thats just how i look at it. whoever owns it i am glad they won what they went after.

First, congratulations to Uno.
That is an amazing accomplishment.

TC,
I know you and a few others on the board really enjoy showing dogs. I can appreciate, and I am impressed with the fact that you have show quality hunting dogs. However, I do get put out by the fact that their are show dogs that have had the hunting ability bred out of them.
I have read your grumblings about how some have the voice bred out of them, just to keep it quiet at the house/kennel.
Along with the fact that many show dogs are a picture of the breed essentially aren't worth breeding because they have ZERO function.

IMO, you only breed to better the breed.
To me breeding a dog that has been bred for hundreds of generations for a specific purpose, then take several specimens and start breeding them for show only is criminal. They have no function.
It is like have a Hemi-cuda with no pistons in the motor. Yeah, you can show it off at a car show, but you have to push it on and off the trailer and you dang sure can't drive it.

But then again, most are probably like me - a bit self-centered, egotistical, thinking that we know what is the ideal specimen of the breed when in actuality they probably aren't worth feeding and a very poor representation of the breed. We are just too blind to see the faults, or too ignorant to know the faults when we see them.

TC, I got a question....my wife and I got into a discussion over UNO, she says his tail looks "docked"...very short, stubby and bushy. I told her it is probably because all we have ever seen is rabbit dogs at field trials, that have been bred by Joe Blow...and really very few true Beagle bloodlines. I know when I went to trials I seen dogs that looked 1/2 terrier become Grand Bench Champions....and I even own one of them, lol.

Now my question is, Does the tail on UNO look like what a tail should look like on a beagle, according to show standards? I only have 1 dog that has a tail like his.

Thanks!

However, I do get put out by the fact that their are show dogs that have had the hunting ability bred out of them.
I've been involved in several discussions about "breeding out" certain things. If you ask someone on the forums about a line of dogs that started out with a dog that was part terrior;if they would breed to these dogs they would say NO.why you ask, because the terrior is several generations back and is most likely bred out, they will say, nope you can't breed it out there will always be a hint of it still there!!
So with that being said(and I don't want to ruffle any feathers) It seems like to me people like to choose what can be bred out and what cannot.
It also seems like to me if you can't "breed out" terrior blood, then how could hunt be bred out of a purebred beagle????????
But then again, most are probably like me - a bit self-centered, egotistical, thinking that we know what is the ideal specimen of the breed when in actuality they probably aren't worth feeding and a very poor representation of the breed. hmmm

I think the tail is supposed to stop at the hock if you run it down along the rear leg. Few are to short & lot have to much but it is something to be selected and bred for too be right. To long, tail whippers and lack of "brush" cause all this tail docking of bleeding tails. If you hunt the thick briar, a rabbitdawg with uno's tail might be just what you need...

Hunt/desire is an invisible trait we breed for, it must be tested for to be known. The more generations it is ignored, the more recessive or lost it becomes, the same with any trait.
Along with hunt comes method/style, nose ability and brains to put it all together. If you don't test and require these things of your hound, you are breeding blindly as to producing a rabbithound. These qualities do not set idlely aside waiting to be pulled out of a hat generations down the road... ;)
It's always funny to me how people go on about seeing a stud dog run before breeding but, think their improving by breeding to a showdog, while forgetting all the other necessary qualities that makes a beagle, a beagle in the first place...

I stand corrected.
You call hunt an invisible trait, what do you call the terrier in a mix bred dog? wouldn't it become just as recessive after so many generations also,or would it be dominate because its a whole other breed?
I'm not being a smart aleck, just trying to learn a thing or two.

What are you calling "terrier" about the hound, short high set ear, light build, squeakie mouth??? All things easy to evaluate vrs. hunt ability.
Yes, you could breed out the terrier look and put in the mouth by breeding selection and culling those not fitting your mold...but what do you represent the culls as?
