I wouldnt lose any sleep about it Paul. You are going directly from the rules book, people that never bothered to read the rules think if there is a protest, and the judge commited a rules violation, the cast gets re-ran.
WRONG!
Paul you said "we are getting old".....speak for yourself my friend, I am in my PRIME!
I am sure you did a fine job as the MOH at this hunt. Sorry I couldnt attend, I havent been able to attend very many hunts over the past couple of years.
To Bili - No, Although this was blatantly unfair there were no actual rule violations here. They were all judgement calls, but obviously bad calls. It probably would have been taken up if the actual owner of the hound was present, but in this case a guy was just handling the dog for someone else. He did question it in the field, but the judge said he didn't need or want any input from the handlers so that was the end of it.

lance i agree with you even though i haven't judged but when there is a yuong judge trying his best the older guy's try and scare him or complain when he's only trying but i guess they forget they were rookies at judgeing also. this sport is going to die like alot of things have if we don't teach and keep the younger guy's around.

I've stated this before and I'll make it clear again that I have never trialed a beagle BUT I did UKC coon hounds for many years. I've read the rules and could find NO WHERE that it even states to re-run a cast. The rules do clearly state just as they do with UKC coon hound trials how to lodge a complaint or questioning what went on by not signing the score card. The rules also cite specific time limits to address that complaint with the MOH and that their decision is final unless you put your money up and file a "FORMAL" protest. I've witnessed many of the BIG time dog guys and handlers trying to intimidate a young judge which is one of the reasons I got out of it. You got guys in there campaigning dogs for the money of stud/puppy fees and it then becomes a business adventure or a big ego thing for those that have to puff up their chest or wear sock hats because their heads swell so big they can wear nothing else. Folks this is when it no longer is fun to a lot of guys and they leave the sport and go off to themselves.
guys im a feild judge, bench judge, breed inspector and moh ive never been to a big hunt and i mostly judge at my club when needed for i am a big guy and quiet frankling my fat arse has a hard time keeping up at times i tell the guys before i cast the hounds that im big and im slow and there may be some stuff i miss out there but i will score what i see i am honest and have never had a protest. the first thing i do when i judge is grab a score book the second thing i do is i grab a rule book. i read my rules and i think i know them pretty good but i am only human soi carry a rule book with me that way if something comes up that im not totally for sure of i have a reference i look it up the rule books are the same size as a score card and they fit nicely in your back pocket, shirt pocket, and bib pocket i know alot of judges that do the same this is my opinion

I HAVE SAW PEOPLE PUT DIFFERENT CASE'S UP ON THIS BOARD OF HOW JUDGES DO THINGS DIFFERENT---SOME ONE SAID TAKE THE JUDGE'S LISCENE, IF HE DON'T KNOW THE RULES LET HIM STUDY AND RETEST, SO MANY HUNTS YOU GO TO .FIRST THING YOU HEAR WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH JUDGES.WELL I WOULD RATHER WAIT ALL DAY ON A GOOD JUDGE THAN GO OUT WITH A CHEATING BUDDY JUDGING A$$ AND THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS A LOT OF THE TIME.I DON'T KNOW ABOUT MOST OF YOU BUT IF I GET UP AT 3:00 AND DRIVE 3 OR 4 HRS PAY MY ENTRY FEE I AM THERE TO WIN. I HAVE SAW MORE BUDDY JUDGING LATELY,, BECAUSE THE CLUBS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH JUDGES AND A LOT OF GUY'S BRING THEIR OWN JUDGES WITH THEM,, BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT.BEWARE OF THE TRAVELING JUDGES. I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE GUY'S AND I' AM NOT DIRECTING THIS AT THEM AT ALL BUT I BELIEVE IF YOU CAN JUDGE" PLEASE DO, BUT IF YOU CAN'T PLEASE DON'T YOU WILL DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

beware of home-cooked buddy judging, they will screw you every time. Beware of traveling judges they are mostly ignorant morons who dont know that your dog is supposed to win.

Have you ever been to a big hunt????? I've never seen a shortage of judges at them....
Yes, I've been to a few big hunts (Grand National, State Hunts, and a few larger club hunts).
I was at the world hunt this year and run to where I couldn't run anymore because other judges weren't stepping up.
Ask the MOH if getting judges was easy.
im not trying to bash the judge or moh in this case i dont even know them im just trying to understand these calls it just seems like that in the few hunts i have been to and theres been a protest it goes by the mohs opinion and not by the rule book itsself i have yet to enter a dog at one of these hunts just gone to watch so far at this hunt just walking around after the cast everybody i ran into was talking about the decision not to run the cast over was unbelievable because of such a obvious rules violation costing the cast 4 or 5 minutes of hunting time and everybody had won or lost in less time then that so im asking what would deem running a cast over if not a rules violation then what and does it go by the rule book or just by the moh opinion of what he thinks might have happened
If you read them, there is very little left for interpretation.
Yes there are judgement calls, that is up to the judge and I doubt you will ever see a MOH rule against a judge. The judge was there, he made the call.
The MOH steps in when a rules violation is in question.
If it is confirmed, they will make the necessary changes on the scorecard afterward. If it affected the outcome (such as the judge wrongfully scratching a dog) they would be forced to re-run the cast.
