Just found out that I am able to hunt rabbit with a .410 pistol in Wisconsin. Anybody have recomendations for a good .410 pistol? Seems like alot of fun and a bit more challenging.

My buddy and I both use the Encore 45/.410 I would go with the 15" barrel it is alot less noise on your ears and I bought a shoulder rig at Bass Pro for about $40. It is great not having to tote the shotgun and I can honestly say I will never go back to rabbit hunting without my pistol.

I hunt with 2 guys who use TC Contenders, don't always harvest what they shoot at, but, I'd say they are about as accurate as I am with a long gun. I used a Super Commanche when my good buddys from WV were visiting and found I could hit something with that. I have one on order as we speak. I was advised by other members of my hunting party that I should stick with the long gun if I wanted to have meat on the table. What do they know? Another member of the party carries a Contender AND a 12ga shotgun. Like wearing suspenders with a belt. Oh well. :hammer:

How do they do with the .45 cartridges? Would you need a pistol permit in NC?

Yes, you can shoot 3in shells in the 45/.410 TC barrel.

This is my first year with the T/C contender. I have a ten inch barrel on mine and shoot 2 3/4 #7 1/2 shells. I love the gun. I have had no problems hitting rabbits. But I am picky with my shots. You have to realize that it has limitations and that it is not a longarms 12 or 20 gauge. I don't take shots at sprinting or full run rabbits with the T/C. I pick shots at hopping or sitting rabbits just ahead of the dogs. I use a shoulder holster which makes it a breeze to carry. Heres a pic of a recent hunt. You can see the shoulder holster in the photo. I've tried using 3" shells but out of my gun they scatter the shot way hight sometimes missing the paper all together. I found the 2 3/4 inch shells to pattern really well out to about 25 yards. Thats with my ten inch barrel. A longer barrel may extend the range, But maybe not.

You can get a super comanche for a lot less money than the contender. They are around $200 or less where I believe the contender is $500 or more.

you are right about the contender being about 500 but I will never go back to a long gun either. I have described it like fishing with ultralight tackle. With the Contender you have to take the choke tube out to shoot 45s so it should be legal.

I payed about $335 dollars for mine on the gunbroker.com auction. It was used but in like new condition and it came with the brown holster you see in the photo. I just purchased the black shoulder belt. I had to watch the auctions for a while before i got one at that price, but its worth a try. DH

What kind of recoil do these 410 pistols have?

recoil on the Contender is minimal, but mine has a 16 inch barrel so it is heavy. I read some reviews on the Comanche that said that they shoot to the left noticeably. Didn't say if that was trying to use the sights or what, but wondering if anyone else ever noticed that. Considering one for snakes and such, my Contender barrel is jsut too long to carry around all summer.
