I was in the same situation 45 years ago, 15 years old and wanted a rabbit hound in the worst way. I cut a lot of lawns, trimmed a lot of hedges, and shoveled a lot of snow , to earn the money needed to purchase that dog.
I think you get the point, nothing in life is free.

Re: Free To A Young Hunter
I wish that the boy was close to me and I would give the boy a dog that is faster than my pack. AKC and all, but I also agree that one of the best feeling that I ever had (besides my marriage, and little girl, and our Lord) was when I could buy my own personal hound. My Dad always told me the best things in life are not free, and you get what you pay for. but I have also learned that it sure does feel good to do something good.
I did not mean to sound cold hearted. just agreeing witha point.

Re: Free To A Young Hunter
I have given away a few beagles - or sold them real cheap to folks that are trying to get into beagling. That being said, if someone can't afford to purchase a beagles, as cheap as they are compared to other breeds, they sure are not going to be able to afford taking care of them. The purchase price of a pup is cheap compared to 10 years cost of providing for them - food, shots, worming, vet bills, bedding, collars, pen, house, etc. As an example, I had a beagle cut her pad extremely bad -- nearly off. $350 later and 3 trips to the vets she was on her way to healing.
Make sure you can afford a beagle before you commit to one. And it wouldn't hurt to read "Where the Red Fern Grows." Working hard for something you want never hurt anyone.
Merry Christmas,
-Pete
