GAUGING A HOUND

I BOUGHT A DOG JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO,THE GUY SAID HE WAS A 9 ON SPEED,WELL AFTER TRYING THE DOG OUT HE WAS A 6.I DON'T THINK THE GUY WAS TRYING TO CHEAT OR LIE,BUT JUST DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER.GUYS IF YOU DON'T KNOW DOGS WELL ENOUGH TO GAUGE ONE.PLEASE BE HONEST WITH YOUR-SELF AND GET SOMEONE WHO DOES KNOW TO GAUGE IT FOR YOU.

The seller could of been very honest with you.

Brace hound breeders and owners or UBGF breeder or owners would call a dog very fast, 7-9 (a windsplitter) that LP or Big Pack breeders or owners would call almost a walkie talkie or a 2 at best. Don't buy until YOU see it hunt and run is the best advice.

I've sold dogs to men that said they wanted a fast footed, close running dog and wouldn't come run it, so it was on trial. Most times they called back and said the dog was running 100 yards or more ahead of their dogs. Did I misrepresent?

I have a dog for sale on here that runs a track mainly by himself as if he is running solo when run with most folks fast packs. Great jumpdog, but, way too fast footed for pack running.Will scatter a pack over 100 acreas. Rabbit comes by full speed with ears laid back. Short races as he'll catch the rabbit if it ever squats. That's fast, to me a 9, to most others a 15!

but if you ask a veteren in spo about a speed his 8 is a arha lp guys 3 or 4
so the best way is just ask to see it run or get a 1 week trail

Maybe all beaglers should own a radar gun or get the local police department to gauge thier dogs speed ,lol . Just as was stated ,speed in the eye of a brace trialer vs LP , BP or what ever is & will be different. Don't think most beaglers will stand up & out & out lie about a dog ( I know some will ) It's all in what you use as a gauge. That hound was most likely faster than his other ,thus 9 on speed. If you don't get the a trail peroid or go see'm run you can only be pi$$ed at yourself.JMHO

You are right as always though as a radar gun would help!!! LOL

I do something l;ike that though as I always ask the seller if they are in good physical shape or have someone who runs with them that is?

If I get a yes, then I ask what does it take in people language to keep up with the dog?

Some say crawl behing on all fours.Some say walk fast, Some say slow trot. Some say run. Some say run fast like a sprinter. Some say if they were wide open, they would only be half way around the circle when the dog was all the way back to the starting place. Some say a quarter way around.

This is better thasn a goofy number that tells nothing.

Weither it is SPO hound, PP Pack hounds,or LP Pack they all have a differant Gears my brother has what I call spo hounds I have a Branko male that runs 50 yards a head of them he tells me that dog is just to fast but when I run with LP hounds hes real close to them and at times behind them Im kinded like another guy on here when I used to race horses we had a timer that started when the horse broke the Radar line and broke it again after the run then you got a time and the fastest time won maybe like grey hound racing put the rabbit in front of the dog and let him chase it for time best time gets a 1. 10 ,2.9 ,3.8 ,4.7 ,5.6 ,6.5 ,7.4 ,8.3 ,9.2 ,10.1 1-10 might work ,worked in Jackpop Horse shows

That's the exact way I used to guage the speed of dogs. Living here in NE Nebraska, I have always been geographically removed from other beaglers, making it hard to see dogs run for myself. It usually gave me a very good indication of a dogs speed.
But speed, as we all know is not everything, the dog should crawl like a Brace hound when conditions dictate, and race like the speed of light when conditions allow. Few dogs have the mental make up to correctly adjust gears. I've had one out of the 40+ beagles I've owned, and many of the others would have been considered good gundogs. Went to Ontario in the late 80's or early 90s and bought her, she was hare hound breeding,to slow and tight on checks for LP trials, but the perfect gundog. Unfortunateley she got smashed on the road before I could breed her. Had planned to ship here to Vermont to breed to Nomad's Buckshot Mr. Bill.
I am going to get back into beagling after a 5-6 year absence, and am trying to decide on the style of dog to buy. Am thinking I want Nomad's Buckshot Mr. Bill heavy in the pedigree.

A good way to guage a hounds speed is ask the owner if they have ever driven a stick shift vehicle. And if they say yes, then ask them in what gear 1 to 5 would you class your hound in (the majority of the time) and then times that by 2. This would give you a scale to go by. You will find out that most people will say between 3rd and 4th and as it seems on this board is the magic number of 7. Everybody has a hound that runs a 7 very few run a 6 or an 8 and I dont ever believe that I have saw a 3 or 10 on here? Why is this? Is this because you dont want to put yourself out of the market to sell a hound or is it because that is what the average hound runs? I believe that is what the average hound runs. Speed is also determined by the type of topography and cover that you run in. If your hound is used to running on mountain sides with thich underbrush and briars a 7 would be an 8 on flat ground where a hound can stretch out. The absolute best way that you can put a number on the speed of a hound is take him/her and run them yourself and compair them to a hound of yours.
