getting ready

Post by tiffinis »

I know I have been among the missing, life has been frantic this summer. But I am however getting ready to attend my first dog show on the 28th of July in Bloomsburg PA. I am not sure how big it is, but it is just 7 miles from my house and at the Fairgrounds there so I am pretty sure it is not going to be real little. Any advice for a first timer?

I am still hoping to work something out for a pup. I haven't given up hope. I am a photographer that does weddings so this time of year for me is crazy. I am hoping to change that in the coming year.

Tiff,

Enjoy yourself. We talked about attending that show but we decided against it.

We have a few others in the next couple of months we have talked about attending. A little closer to home.

The cost and gas prices right now are killing our trialing and shows.

Bill

GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
Who do you have entered, what sex, and which class?
Have you eve taken a handling class? Do you have someone to help you groom? Do you have a show lead and a nice skirt suit?? NOT too short ;)

Your judge is:
Mrs. Betty McHugh
1505 Winchester Road E.
Oshawa, Ontario
CN L1H 8L7,

She's Canadian and she hasn't judged alot in the US. She'll know the big guns but at least she probably won't know everyone ;)

P.S. For the lady judges I recommend dressing like you are going to church or to work in the library...nothing sexy! Be "Miss Manners" too ;)

The male judges it depends if they are straight or gay....I never have had much luck with the gay judges if any of the many goodlooking gay male handlers are in the ring.

 I love all the advice. Thanks, but no I don't have anybody entered. I thought about entering Lace even though I know she doesn't have the SQ head that they are looking for, I know her body is pretty high in conformation. I am just going to get the feel of things. See how it is done, etc. THEN I need the pup, the handling classes, the grooming advice, etc etc etc. WV bill, so sorry you decided not to come to that one, would have been a great opportunity to get together, since the summer so far has not allowed that. I cant believe July is half way over. Just don't know where the time has gone. I did find out yesterday though, that the wedding I had scheduled for September 28 in Oregon has been postponed. So that opens up that weekend to go the event you talked about for that weekend. IF....... I can find someplace to stay for a reasonable sum. NOW I am getting excited!!

another question for you. All my dogs are trained to handle to my left. Do only handle to the right for showing? Is that how you differentiate as to the job that needs done? Or do you just handle them on that side always?
For my SAR dog, vest or harness made the difference on "what" he was looking for. Vest meant live find or possible body, harness meant cadaver. Also told him a different tone of "story" to get him ready to go.

Show dogs are all handled on the left. Just use a different collar/lead for the show ring. ;-)

what I see watching the shows on TV, the dog is on the handlers right as they go out across the ring but on the left as they are going around the ring, as the dog is towards the middle of the arena from the handler, as they are going counterclockwise.

They are always on the left. Occasionally a handler will do a down and back with the dog on the right if he is crabbing or something. The left side of the dog is the dogs "showside" and we go counter clock wise yes! Even when stacking them on the table you always set them up the left side of the dog towards the judge.

When you are ready to get a pup let me know. I know some people down in PA. who breed showbeagles.

Hopefully you will meet up with some nice beagle people at the shows. Be sure to stop by the kennel clubs desk (probably catalog sales) and ask about handling classes or other clubs that might be closer to your area. I think there are quite a few all breed clubs in PA but, I'm not sure where your located.

You Moore boyz don't need my help!! LOL you are doing great on your own! ;-)

Thanks Leah, that is the kind of stuff I was looking for. What I should look for, things I should kind of look for besides the dogs... LOL. Starting from the ground up here. I am a sponge, I research everything I do before I jump in.
I have watched a ton of dog shows on Animal Planet, but that I am sure that is about like the 5 minute coverage we get of the war in Iraq on the evening news, just the side they want to show us.

Any general admittance rules for spectators I should know ahead of time?

BTW I am headed to boy scout camp (gonna teach photography), I will catch up with you all next week.

THANKS!!!

The majority of dog shows are free to the public. Do not bring a dog of your own. Unentered dogs are not allowed. Go to the superintendents desk (should be a sign) and ask for a judging program or you can buy a catalog. Once the show closes we can look online and see what time beagles are showing so you don't miss them. Bring a chair to sit ringside and stay for groups. Many people will watch breed judging then leave. There is a lot to learn by watching groups.

here is a pdf of the premium list. http://www.raudogshows.com/shows/July/LACK.pdf
