TOUCHSTONEBGLS wrote:Correct beagle structure is not designed for extreme speed nor are they slow brace dogs. The standard requires strait pasterns which are better for endurence than speed. Bent pasterns are better for speed and you see lots of them in our hunting beagles but they are not correct breed type even though they are plenty functional in a 2 hr hunt with a format that promotes speed. Correct structure gives a good amount of speed but is more suited to excellent tracking abillity. Along with the balanced motion to make the turns to help a dog stay close on the line. Some sacrifices will be made in the first few generations breeding for the total dog. The end result of having both excellent structure and hunt are well worth the struggle. Voice is another great observation. Many of the show beagles that I have run with are marginal at best on voice. Know of any show lines that have a big hound voice? Know of any hunt lines that are known for a quallity hound voice that is used correctly (on runnable scent). Beau has sired pups with all kinds of voice - not something he seems to be dominant on. Are any sires dominant on excellent voice?
No I don't and if you are going to cross in show blood you need to bring plenty of mouth, both quantity and quality, from the other side. Out of my last litter of a cross like that I got one big male pup with a loud fast chop mouth and the rest had just fair vocal talents. Show breeders would rather they NOT have much in the way of a bark and one of my full show bitches only can sorta squeak like you are squeezing a rubber mouse toy.

I asked about breeding to Mama's Boy last summer, but Hal told me the dog is so "muscled up" from pulling contests that he's not sure he could get the job done now. So I bred to one of his sons from an Echo Run female of Kathy Carling's.

Why would muscle interfere with mating?

There's only one muscle that I can think of that could interfere and that muscle belongs to the bitch, lol.

That's just what Hal told me. I assumed he wasn't "agile" enough.....

Here is a female pup from JC and TC. It's kind of dark but Amy was working with her when I got home from running tonight, so I snapped a picture. She is still young, but starting to fill out pretty nice. We will be starting her around the begining of April.

She's very pretty. Are you planning to show her in conformation?

Thanks, Depends on how she turns out. I will be trialing her for sure. I have only been to one AKC show and had a good time but im not too good at all that grooming stuff......lol, and im not sure how she would do in them. I would like to go to a UKC Conformation event sometime to see what they are like also. Amy and I plan to taka a handeling class as soon as the trials slow down. Conformation events would defantily be something fun durring the off season.
