TC, you are partly right. There is a lot of BS and games in AKC showing but, listening to some of the chatter on these boards I think its not just that way in conformation showing. If you think about any competitive sport that is subjective and where judges score the participants rather than just a making a point as in basketball or baseball. Your basically at their mercy so, you do your research and you pick and choose. I am confident that the champions I make up are truely deserving. I just looked at some results online and saw where a breeder entered 3 dogs as fillers. These dogs were 10,11,12 years old. That to me is sick! and I wouldn't embarass my dogs or myself by doing such a thing. I would say that most dogs earn their championships ethically. Its a whole nuther thing in the group ring.

MHO,

I've been reading an excellent book entitled "Reaching For The Stars" by Mary Roslin Williams. I would recommend it to any dog breeder. On page 20, she says this: "The middle-ranger....joins in with the novices and comes in time to subscribe to the idea that 'names' win because they are 'names'. Once he really comes to believe this he will be a middle-ranger forever, because he will never discover why the good breeders' dogs win."

TC...It isn't all as crooked as it seems....I am having to learn Beagles in the ring...I already know Brittanys and have a list of "JUDGES I WOULDN'T SHOW TO IF THE SHOW WAS IN MY LIVING ROOM"...most judges sincerely try to judge dogs not handlers...some others are just lazy, some are just ignorant, some are both and won't put the effort into finding the BEST DOG... Now trialing Beagles in the Deep South has been a different story!!! Buddy juding for the past 3 years ran rampant...It has begun change some..Essentially ya got to learn the judges..who is fair and who plays games. Keep a positive attiude..and enjoy those wins..and live with the disapointments

Now I let my Wife and Daugter handle the Dogs as I kinda have a Mouth

I still Do handle the Dogs in UKC and have a lot of Fun at it...
But then again they are looking at the DOG!!!!
Sometimes the judge needs a little extra incentive to pick your dog, thats why most handlers that haven't been in shows since B.C. keep a judges notebook. ;)
We keep notes like "Likes kids" :baby: or :bozo: "Dirty old Man" (that means use my 23 yr. old daughter as the handler if I can get her to come show, lol), of course some are dog related comments like " Cute and little" or "MOVEMENT" which are my favorite type of judges as our Beagles have that here or they're gone to pet homes  ....
