I've always taken a major "hit" to my overall conformation anytime I used a field only hound. And we are talking about nearly 30 years of crossing field and show lines, not just one or two crosses. I have the most success when I breed to hounds that have a mixture of show and field lines. Going show only or field only does not produce the type of hound I am after.

If you bred a brace hound to a show hound and the results were acceptable or good, where would you go next? If neither the brace hound or the show hound suited you in the field, you are taking a HUGE gamble to make such a cross. Personally, I'd rather find a female from a strong dual or field family and take her to the show male. At least then you'd be able to linebreed the puppies back to her family and maybe set some characteristics, as well as pick up some conformation from the male. Breeders should always be thinking 2 or 3 generations ahead.

BH,

Where I am going next is, find a male that will complement (not compliment, since dogs do not talk) my bitches conformation (not confirmation, since they are not members of a religious sect) and performance qualities while hopefully not throwing glaringly weak genes into the pool. Your kind offer of a free breeding would be a great choice, except for the fact that you live 500 miles away and keep 15 inch hounds.

I'm diddling around with a few possibilties close by, most of the hype evaporates pretty quickly once the tailgate drops.... sound familiar?

Sounds a little crazy, but I had excellent results by breeding a show male to a brace trial type female. The old girl has mouth, nose and guts to spare, just no foot... but the pups had it all
We started the Same way
That is definitley going to be the exception, not the rule. Usually you would get some like the sire, some like the dam, and maybe a couple, but more than likely none that will take on the best characteristics of both. You must have done something right!
Well I guess we did ok to then Huh
The Dog posted below was from a Field Bitch (brace line) to a Show male!!

Will post pics of the new pups later LOL

I think the Whole thing is to LOOK at what your breeding!! Study the lines Look to inprove on your good qualitys and stay away from the bad.
Conformation is Fairly Easy to breed For The Hunt is another thing that can be accessable But to get both your Going to have to Do your research.
They may not all be what you were hoping for But you Will learn in the process. We already have a Stud in Mind for the female from this litter We will see what happens You think 4 to 5 gen down the road is Far enough?????

TC, good job and don't listen to the "green with envy" naysayers pointing out the flaws in your breeding program. Chance is the best looking dog on the board and probably better in the field than most too. Wish he was a little smaller and a lot closer!

Thanks Larry We do Appreciate the complement.
Now as far as Chance I have seen Some REALLY nice Dogs on the board!!! BUT i like him hes my Bud and thats all that matters in the long run aint it?

He is the first in the Box when I go Huntin Some dont like his STYLE in the field But He CAN and WILL run a Rabbit (his Rabbit) and thats what we are breeding For.
That blaze Dog is a Real Nice looking Hound Just Stick with it it will come...

(his Rabbit) What I mean by this is He could care less what the other hounds in the pack are doin at times! he will lock onto the line and just stick with it as long as he has Sent and Will gear down When he needs to he is just happy in the middle of the pack WELl that just dont seem to get most judges attention like the front Runners Will So usually Dont get called back do to low Score...

And Larry the naysayers Dont really bother me as Much as those Who think they are the first to do this.
We aint the first and Wont be the last BUT I can guarantee We will be around awhile :D

Very nice hounds TC, hope you didn't take offense to what I said earlier. We don't own show hounds, just hard hunting hounds that come from a very long line of hard hunting hounds, we do try to keep the conformation correct for hours upon hours of work in the field. I was simply making the statement that by breeding two dogs that have very little similar traits, you're going to be hard pressed to get results that are consistent. I have found it works best to work with dogs that have been proven for many many generations and line-breed this family (with a few outcrosses) to get consistency. It's kinda like saying if you breed a brace hound with a large pack on hare, you're going to get a nice med-fast hound, hmm...not likely!! But, I wish you the best of luck, your beagles are beautiful and if they are good hunters-even better!! :D
