As for the "trotter" Competetion we'll have to see, trailing season is here and I will be pretty busy. I have had a couple of people offer to finish Reb for me in AKC show ring and I'm sure once they see Glory will want her also. LOL!! Working on the Gait along with starting pen, shes full of energy and free stacking is difficult at times, but will stack nicely on the bench. I will try to get some video and send of her in the pen. "TOTAL DOG"? I like what I see so far. UKC look out this is whats next for Sundown Beagles in 07!! Dave McVay
I would LOVE to see her in action and in person. Hopefully I can do that sometime. She's a parker daughter so, naughty, wiggle and handful are part of her gene pool. she comes by it honestly.

Best of luck with her!

TOUCHSTONE wrote:The current breed standard best describes the physical make-up that would best suit the ideal hunting specimen. That is a fact that some may not yet be ready to acknowledge. This will slow the progress for some. Others will breed with the goal of developing dogs that have structure like Parker combined with excellent hunt characteristics. This is where the breed will reach its full potential. Several breeders must accomplish this or the gene pool of TOTAL DOGS will be too limited. Dan M
Dan,
Exactly, that's why I went to the English packs to gain structure. Structure from hounds that have long been bred to hunt, in the manor the Breed was created for.
It is only my way, but the risk of gaining one(structure) and loosing the other(hunt) is too great a cost, at the risk of breeding from a soft line(show only). It takes 3 generations to prove what you've picked up(gained), is set in the line, along with that time is the threat of poor traits surfacing and a regression of material, back to what you started with.
I ask myself, why go through the time, cost and trouble of reinventing the wheel, when there's already a proper wheel, that has what I need available to draw from, at no risk of loosing what I've already got and also the chance of picking up extra good formal pack qualities. To see 23 1/2 couple of hounds loose and under control is a awsome sight. To watch hounds work at the check in a ever widening cast, feathering out like a flow to cover every inch of ground in search of the line. Then, the cry of the find and the whole pool flows like water to the head and rushes forward. There is real beauty in seeing hounds do what they were bred for.
The gene pool you spoke of is another advantage of bring two long divided hunting hound groups together. Hounds bred seperately along the same line, for the same intent, making the perfect outcross, as many of the old masters have said. Maybe this will create the "perfect storm", I don't know, it's yet to be seen...
I wish everyone the best, on their journey for the perfect hound. Success will write history and add to everyone's benefit... ;)
Best Wishes...Patch

Will get Donny to post a pic this weekend. Thats good to know Leah, shes so much fun right now. Parkers article "Beagle Boogle Boy" and pic are framed in the kennel, everyone asks whos that? LOL Then when they see a pup from him in a hunting/show kennel they are really amazed, not to mention that we own the mother and that the pup wasnt just purchased. Give us a few more months and will be glad to answer any question on him reproduceing hunt.

Maybe Dave could copy and post the "Beagle Boogie Boy" article for us? Never heard of it!

Leah,

I just heard the same thing at my work yesterday. They were saying that Special and I would match in the ring.

Honey Pot, he is a nice looking hound. Special is a very active beagle. I can sit and watch her run around the house and play and seems like she never tires out. Her and my Little Bit Jealous female can play for hours.

The dog described below just won a huge BEST IN SHOW this past weekend at a large ALL breed Show.

Sorry Cindy, but I'll pass on the dog you mentioned. Why? I really should not do this but here goes. Short flewie muzzle, too much forechest, overdone ears, bad top line, straight and slopes to rear (no arch over loin, short crop, bad tailset (too high), tail appears to be overly straight), from pic looks like he may be a bit over at knee(not sure ??), front feet (pigeon toed ??), overangulated in rear, better than most but still too much body depth for length of leg below ( looks to be only about a .9 ratio). Needs a bit more air under him. Depending on what age he is, as he matures and chest fills it will get worse. Like to see a bit more of an angle at pastern. Depending on Judge will do just fine in showring. Would not be suprised if he wasn't narrow at the point of hips, A-frame in rear?? Pictures are not always fair way to look at hounds. Much easier when they are in front of you. In person I might like him better, might not. I will agree that he is appears to be better than much of what is out there. A look through a few Show Beagle Quarterly's will pretty much verify that.

Thankyou Dave!!! :D
Brady is coming home from Florida right now and OF COURSE I have four bitches about to go into season and OF COURSE they ALL live in my house (all of the dogs)...so not too sure about adding Mr. Reb to the picture right now if you know what I mean? He sure is one beautiful dog though and I have talked to Donny about breeding him with Honey at some point. She is definitely a rabitt dog at heart and you should hear her squeal and howl when she gets on a track out back..lotsa Echo Run...
She is Bradys dam...so far it looks like she produces lotsa bone...
Keep in touch.

If my memory is correct, I believe he also did quite well at a recent Beagle Speciality. It is rare that one gets such quick affirmation of what appears to have been a very correct and true observation.

Cindy, congrats on finishing Brady to his Champ. The only thing that could make it better than home bred and raised is to have been on the end of the lead. Lots more fun. Congrats.
