Report: Obama admin. reconsidering ban on importation of historical M1 rifles from South Korea
printable page
Submitted by cbaus on Tue, 01/18/2011 - 15:00. National Politics Guns in the News Gun Grabbers
The Outdoor Wire has learned the United States Department of State is reconsidering last year's decision to block the importation of World War II rifles from the Republic of Korea.

Citing concerns over the proposed demilitarization and disposal of 850,000 surplus M1 Garand rifles and M1 Carbines, the State Department had rescinded authorization for the transfer, saying the decision was based on the "collective Administration's effort to analyze the impact of this potential transfer."

The "collective effort" included an ATF protest supposedly based on the "ease with which an M1 Carbine, in particular, can be converted into a fully automatic rifle."

The other bugaboo was "significant law enforcement concerns associated with the movement of small arms across U.S. borders, especially the Southwest Border."

Seems when a political position is taken, it is defended to the death. Some members of the current administration have doggedly maintained the fallacious position that unscrupulous U.S. firearms dealers were responsible for supplying military weapons directly to Mexican drug cartels. Because of that position, the importation of M1 Carbines from South Korea simply couldn't be permitted.

Enter Gary Marbut, President of the Montana Shooting Sports Association.

Marbut's the man given credit (or blame, depending on who's talking) for pushing through the Montana-Made Gun Bill. Under this legislation, firearms made in Montana, sold only in Montana and used only in Montana were exempt from federal regulation because they were never subject to interstate movement.

That bill became the basis for what came to be known as Firearms Freedom Acts, state challenges to the federal government's ability to impose gun restrictions on that state's citizens.

Tennessee, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota passed similar legislation, and it remains under consideration in a number of other states as well. It's also the subject of federal litigation and appeals - far from a settled issue.

Marbut brought the surplus rifles decision to the attention of Montana Senator Max Baucus.

Baucus questioned the State Department Decision, and it appears kicked off the re-examination of the denial of import permission.

Earlier this week, Baucus received word from the State Department that efforts "continue to explore options with the Republic of Korea for the disposition of these firearms."

Options include authorization to transfer a smaller lot - 100,000- of the M1 Garands and Carbines, with those smaller batches to be transferred "subject to genuine collector demand" over a number of years.

That proposal, however, is still subject to "more, specific information" being provided by the Republic Korea.

But it's progress on preserving at least a significant chunk of World War II historical arms.

The Department of State promises to keep Senator Baucus updated on developments.

We promise to do the same for you.

Let's not be fooled. This ban originally went into effect in 2006 under President Bush. The same excuse was given then for the same M1 rifles. There's some other force at work other than the serving administration. 880,000 rifles sit in South Korea waiting for good Americans to take them in. Don't just sign the petition, call your Senators and Reps. Let's bring these rifles home.

Washington, DC 20005

Reagan ensured passage of ban, which is set to expire next month unless President Bush acts

Washington, DC - The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence today (Wednesday) released "Reagan's Gun Legacy," a report detailing the Gipper's surprising efforts to pass the federal assault weapons ban and other gun laws, including the Brady Bill. The Educational Fund released the report on the eve of the Republican National Convention, where conservatives will no doubt pay homage to the 40th President.

The full report, including Ronald Reagan's record and rhetoric on the gun issue, can be accessed here http://www.csgv.org/document.cfm?documentID=285.

The conservative icon, who Guns & Ammo Magazine once referred to as "The Gun Owner's Champion," was instrumental in passing several gun safety laws, including the landmark assault weapons ban and Brady Law. In rebukes to the gun lobby, Ronald Reagan:
Directly lobbied members of the House of Representatives to support the 1994 federal Assault Weapons Ban. The ban passed by only two votes; at least two House members publicly credited Reagan's direct appeals for their "aye" votes.

Personally urged Members of Congress in the early 1990s to pass the Brady Law, a major gun safety initiative vigorously opposed by the gun lobby.

Banned cop-killer bullets, undetectable handguns, and the manufacture and sale of machine guns.

"This report details how, on many occasions, Ronald Reagan put public safety above the extreme interests of the gun lobby," said Joshua Horwitz, Executive Director of the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence. "President Reagan's actions stand in stark contrast to those of the current President. President Bush has repeatedly promised to ban assault weapons, The assault weapons ban is scheduled to expire on September 13 unless President Bush and Congress act.

Date of Release: August 25, 2004

Obama bans over 100,000 rifles-------NOT A MILLION----David Kopel • August 18, 2010 12:09 am

According to The Korea Times, the Obama administration has blocked efforts by the South Korean government to sell over a hundred thousand surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market. These self-loading were rifles introduced in 1926 and 1941. As rifles, they are especially well-suited to community defense in an emergency, as in the cases of community defense following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Along with AR-15 type rifles, the M1 rifles are the quintessential firearms of responsible citizenship, precisely the type of firearms which civic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project teach people how to use.

According to a South Korean official, “The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions.”-

That sounds like another left wing organization who got what the wanted then turned on the President after it was signed into Law.
Isn't it a fact that Reagan had to battle continuously with a Tip O'neal led democratic Controlled congress. He probably had to make a deal for political reasons. That was before Fox News and the Internet. The New York Times, CBS, NBC, ABC had complete control of news that was fed to the public. Any bad event in those days was blamed on conservatives, just like they tried to blame conservatives for the shooting of the Rep. in Arizona. In those days they had the freedom to tar anyone they wished.
Much to the disappointment of Rufus and his ilk, their gods, Chris Mathews, Olberman, and Welfare Pimps J Jackson and Rev. Sharpton can now be exposed.

Note to PM: As a public service I will inform you that Keith Olbeman, after being fired by MSNBC, is now working for CURNT TV, Al Gore's network. Isn't that special.

George H Bush, during the campaign said,"read my lips no new taxes". Then when he capitulated to democratic pressure and signed the tax increase into law they used it against him in the next campaign.

However, Bill Clinton in his Campaign for president said that he would not raise taxes, then after he was elected he said, "heh, heh, you knew I didn't mean it when I said I wouldn't raise taxes".

Just the other day PM was giving Clinton credit for modifying Welfare during his Presidency.. Anyone would have to be brain dead to believe that any liberal would tighten the purse strings, if they had control of Congress. It was Newt Gingrich and the republicans, plus Bill Clinton's unpopularity with the electorate after two years in office, that prompted Clinton to sign the new Welfare Law. Much like The Kenyan is doing after to recent election thrashing, he had to do something contrary to his political philosophy to fool the electorate into believing that "the era of big government is overr"?
