Patch, I was born in the "Promise Land". I have lived the American Dream. I was born in poverty in Louisiana in 1942. I was so ignorant I didn't even know there was a world where a poor kid could succeed. All I knew was pick cotton, pay the loan my Dad borrowed to buy the seed and fertilizer, and help can and store enough food to survive the winter. Fortunately I joined the Navy, got into the Submarine Service, and realized there was opportunity to have a life. I spent seven years in service, met a young lady, married my partner in life, and together we have had everything possible in life. I was telling my family last weekend, I wish my Mom was alive to see results of her hard work trying to instill values and work ethic in her eight children.
My two sons,Electrical Engineer and Computer Science, went through college without a student loan. I have two daughters in law that fit into the family and four healthy intelligent grand children. I spend every evening with my wife of 51 years appreciative of God's blessings.
If that is not the Promised Land and the American Dream then what is it?

My two daughters in laws are always joking with each other about who is our favorite. The younger one told her sister in law, the only reason she married my son was so she could be in the family. The response," Dang you are sharp, I wish I had thought of that line".
I hope you and the other posters/beaglers are enjoying life as much as my wife and I. Maybe you will be as fortunate if Trump gets four more years.

Newt, it was the natural gas explosion that put the nail in our coffin. Natural gas prices and their clean burn, we couldn't compete with the coal cost and the environmental requirements to clean it up. The only thing slowing gas down is the delivery infrastructure. They shut us down as fast as gas comes on-line. Wind and solar is only a small part of it as of now.
I'd guess the average coal plant is 50 yrs old for us. They paid for themselves, made jobs and safe investment for many yrs. Now, drillers and frackers in the industry have a supply and pricing that has squeezed us to the margin of production.
Business is a beast of profit and survival...

It's fun to remember the good ole days. When everyone is in the same boat, you don't feel poor, you find richness within the family. I remember when I was little, 4 or 5, dad would put me in the wagon to kick the corn to the corners of the wagon to fill and even the load (corn on the cob). I played and buried myself in the corn, got hit on the head many times as the corn came off the old single row picker. I grew up putting up hay, from the time I could roll a bale, to the time I went all over the County putting up hay for others. Our first property was scrub ground, Dad pushed it out and plowed it under, then set me out in the middle of 50 acres with a mason jar of ice water and told me to pick up and pile roots and he'd be back in the evening with a wagon to load and take them to burn. Fifty acres of roots seems like an impossible task for a 8 yr old boy, but I had nothing but time. You have to set your mind straight and whittle it down in sections to keep your spirits up.
One thing dad said after we got him out of the hospital was, "my only regret is I didn't have more sons, I've about wore the two I got plum out".
I've been blessed through my life also, my family never wanted for need, but we all want for want's sake... lol
As you know, I disagree with you on Donald from his actions and their results. Gov. spending is up 26%, while corporate spending in manufacturing has been down the last two quarters. His Trade War has over come his tax break stimulus, Companies are buy back and consolidate with their cash, not grow and expand. If the future for us is anything liken to his past, we should really all fear his 7th bankruptcy.

I think your jobs number already includes the GM workers, this morning on Squawk on the Street, their number was around 80k jobs. GM jobs are not new.
You also have to look at GDP has came in a 1.9% , Trump said Obama's 1.9% was terrible but Trumps 1.9% is strong though it's been in a 3 quarters decline. I know every thing is backwards, but my lying eyes tell me cutting interest rates in a strong economy with debt levels rising is selling "Snake Oil". Imho, their setting us up for another fall, subprime loan debt is back up, autos, student loans, yrs ago they said everyone had to spend 125% of what they made to keep the market going, now nothing matters.
When Trump was elected, it was all about main street and hitting back at wall street (drain the swamp), now you have changed to "it's all about Wall Street again". Bailing out the banks and then cutting the regulations to keep them out of the gambling house to be honest.
