With Obama back in office the coal miners are gonna be in trouble. A few have shut down already and it don't look great for a few others. What do you say to their families buck, mo beagle 5000, and Robbie. Question is if the unemployment rate is so slow why try to shut down coal mines, why kick ppl out of the work force. Going the opposite way don't you think??

Market price and transportation cost will always dictate where coal contracts are purchased. We used to buy western coal for it's low sulfur content but it also come with low BTU and higher transport cost.
Now, if your in the shark tank and you want to get rid of union, low demand will shut it down,...you can always reopen under another name later.(never waste a good crisis).
Lots of these power plants were built in the 60's & 70's. our first scrubber came north out of the South in 77' on new units. We were always proactive on emission controls but everything come at a cost.
All this nat. gas has put everything in a bind, 25 yr ago they looked at gas generators to supply native load in the city, maybe old thoughts come back to light now that gas is so cheap but that will only last so long till speculators see the change and demand building then the price goes up,..., the only thing constant is change,... we got lots of waves ahead of us to ride out.

Why is it that the things we depend on always have to get outrageously priced? Most other things people use tend to get less expensive as they become more efficient and more competition comes in to provide the same product?

On a side note with all of this I do believe renewables will become a big part of our energy supply as the technology improves and the costs come down but in the meantime why do we cripple ourselves by limiting access to our fossil fuels and over regulating the exploration and production of them? I personally would like to see some of those regulations made less stringent but maybe with the condition that we continue to put effort into renewables..........just a thought.

Funny that poverty and heavily populated inter-city areas of Ohio controlled the whole dang state. I honestly do not know a person that voted for Obama...no lie...personally, I do not know one....kinda leaving me scratching my head here today. When I called it a night most of Ohio was red with the exception of Cincy/Cleveland...sure makes a fella wonder how much his "vote" really counts at a national level.
Kelly,

Same thing in Michigan. Whole state voted Red, 10 counties voted Blue. Yet Obama carried the stated. Romney was correct, 47% on the take is tough to overcome.

People around you voted for Obama, they just wont admit it. If your on the "take" its not something to be proud of but none the less they know who the Santa Claus candidate was.

It will stay this way untill the Electorial Collage system is done away with. The most populated states and areas in the state decide whitch way the state goes.It almost caused a cival war when this system was put into place. With the technology of today every vote can be counted.Florida and California would have to get their :censored: together for it to work.

Popular vote won't be allowed because it hurts smaller populated states. No president would visit any small state.. Its not necessarily the ellectoral college that is the problem. Its needs to be divided equally instead of a winne rtake all system in most states (all but 2)

Why shouldn't it be based on a popular vote? I would think in a less populated state that it would make those votes count more? And personally I don't care if they visit my state/area anyway......I don't base my decision on whether or not they had a rally in my area. Aren't the electoral votes based on population anyway? And by divided equally do you mean each state would account for the same number of electoral votes? I could see that maybe.......so if 51% of the votes in my state went to a candidate then he wins the electoral votes for my state. I guess to this day though I still don't understand the need for electoral votes as opposed to just the popular vote.

Ya, they would count more technically but the election brought BILLIONS to swing states and other places where candidates thought they could pick up Electoral votes. Its BIG BIG money involved and states like Texas, Cali, New York, Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, Florida and the like would ever let them switch to a popular vote. In the early days of the republic the debate was so fierce over it that it almost caused us not to form a Union in the first place..

It would need a constitutional amendment to change it and it would afect a few other amendments as well. And Amendments to the constitution are INSANELY hard to get passed through either of the methods allowed.

And keeping them proportional is logical- so if obama gets 40 percent and romney gets 60 percent of a states vote in say a state with 10 votes then one gets 6 and one gets 4. But then if a third party guy got one state or two states to votes for him even just a few percent there wouldn't be 270 to get by the other candidates and the house would pick the pres.

DID YOU EVEN READ YOUR OWN darn ARTICLE--- IF YOU CAN't WHY BOTHER POSTING!!! Before anyone believes that this is going to restrict our rights lets see what is actually said!!

"We will not accept any treaty that infringes on the constitutional rights of our citizens to bear arms," he said.

U.S. officials have acknowledged privately that the treaty under discussion would have no effect on domestic gun sales and ownership because it would apply only to exports.

The main reason the arms trade talks are taking place at all is that the United States - the world's biggest arms trader accounting for more than 40 percent of global conventional arms transfers - reversed U.S. policy on the issue after Obama was first elected and decided in 2009 to support a treaty.

THIS HAS ZERO TO DO WITH OUR SECOND AMENDMENT--- Not even the NRA is too pissed about it. It was gonna happen one way or another. You are just fear mongering

I am a coalminer in wv. The EPA is refusing to issue permits for one reason or another. Most recently Consol shut down a surface mine that is working on a section of interstate 74 that will run through our state. Because of permiting issue's. With the new regulations this administration has put forth our price of mining coal has almost doubled. We can't compete with cheap natural gas at our current mining cost. I understand being environmental friendly but we fill we can do both mine coal and be good stewards of the earth. With thousands of already laid off its only gonna get worse.

Unfortunately, we have to all realize that our society is not the same. "I work for you because you deserve it and are entitled to whatever you feel you are entitled to." We will ALL see in the end that voting this man into office again will soon be the downfall of our country. I see it everyday in the schools...we are raising young children to believe they can have what they want and never work for it.

Believe me, I wish I were making these up, but I am not!
Here are a couple examples of DIRECT quotes from some of my students in the last few years...

"I don't have to work, my parents don't work at all and we have money. Dad says he just waits on the mailman to bring his check." I replied, "Well he must be disabled?" The boy said, "No he just says he is because he doesn't like to work." (It amazes me how students will tell it like it is in these instances, but will lie about why their homework is not finished.)

"I don't have to work, all I have to do is sue somebody for something."

I had a black student say this, "I will work and then just say somebody is being a racist and sue the company for millions." Mind you I coached this kid in football, and "had" respect for him as a player.

Not many use the belt anymore for discipline. Not many believe in GOD or read the Bible. Not many make their children EARN their way. Everyone seems to win some kind of award even when they do not deserve it for sports or other extra-curricular activities. Everybody is good. No one is at fault. Homosexuality is ok and you are the one in the wrong if you think any different. Too many liberals and bleeding hearts. If this offends you, there is probably a reason for it.
