As expected, Wisconsin's state Assembly has approved a bill curbing the collective bargaining rights of public-sector employees.
In a vote early Friday morning, the lawmakers advanced legislation that has sparked heated protests in the state and generated national interest at a time when most states are seeking ways to address massive budget deficits. Wisconsin's current shortfall is $137 million.
The bill forces union employees to pay more for health and pension benefits, but it's most controversial aspect strips those employees of collective bargaining rights.Republican Gov. Scott Walker has defended the legislation as essential to dealing with harsh economic realities, but Democrats take a far different view. President Obama himself said it appeared to be an "assault" on unions.
Assembly Democrats had extended debate on the bill for 60 hours before a vote was hastily conducted at 1 a.m. Friday -- with 15 Democratic members still waiting to speak. The Associated Press reported that they shouted "Shame!" and "Cowards!" at their Republican colleagues, who quickly left the floor after the vote.

Re: ----DEMOCRAT'S DID NOT DO NEARLY ENOUGH---
When Walker says he wants to limit collective bargaining to wages and benefits, what he is really saying is that he needs to be free to roll back teacher tenure, reward good teachers with merit pay, give parents choice about where to send their children, and assure that -- even if there are layoffs -- that they are based on merit not seniority. The union contracts all over America block these key changes. But we have to put our children first and improve the quality of our schools.
See Rufus these are the TRUE points that need to be Done away With WHY should a LAZY teacher that Dont Give a Squat about the Kids get a Raise every year??
Why Should someone that Continues to Abuse the System be allowed to Work when hard Working Get it Done folks Get layed off??
Why Should a person that EXCELS at their Job get paid LESS than Someone that hasnt Even got a FAIR rating in 10 years??
If In the Private Sector you Dont perform to Expectation you get Fired But in SOME of the unions you Caint be Fired no matter how bad you Do just because you been there longer.
He isnt doing away with ALL Collective bargaining just those Areas than Dont make Sence
Just because you Work in the public sector Dont mean you should receive a FREE Ride!!!

TC, I agree with your post, except the senoirity part, if the state gets a chance to save some money buy laying off workers that make more money ( senoir workers )they will do it. I do agree that if the employee is a lazy piece of trash and it is documented on his work record then he should be the first to go, i myself am very tired of paying union dues defending people who don't give a crap about there job or their fellow workers.

I Agree I feel it should be based on merit if the Employee has met standards then it should go by Seniority. If you have two or more Employees with the same over all review then it should be that person with LESS time and grade that gets the layoff notice.
BUT the Employee should not just be able to hold their job JUST because they have been there longer.
I Dont See where this has been taken OUT of the Equation at all..
What i have been able to garner is that He is NOT taking ALL collective bargaining Off the table as the DEMS would have us Believe or have fed their kool aid drinkers like Rufus but has Opened it up to FAIR negotiations as it Should be...

High Winds, what do private sector jobs do when payroll exceeds profits? They either go out of business or declare bankruptcy and restructure. They lay workers off and rehire at a lower salary and cut benefits. They have no other choice.high winds wrote:TC, I agree with your post, except the senoirity part, if the state gets a chance to save some money buy laying off workers that make more money ( senoir workers )they will do it. Government on the other hand, raise taxes and keeps increasing wages. Even though the nation is bankrupt, how much has Obama increased government workers wages since taking office? How many more government workers has he hired?
The people in Wisconsin have spoken. The Gov is trying to carry out their wishes.

Newt, i understand what your saying, however i do think that the earlier elected officials who actually caused the problems should be held accountable, they took a oath to perform the job and failed to do so. When an every day american makes a mistake on their taxes or whatnot they pay it back and a fine, why not make politicians pay back all the wasted money.
I guess i'm just getting tired of watching crooks ( politicians ) get away with mismanaging state and federal money and the only person who answers for it is us taxpayers.

FIRST NOTHING HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT LIMITING,COLLECTIVE BARGAINING,IT'S DOING AWAY WITH EMPLOYEE'S RIGHT TO BE REPRESENTED BY ,A,COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT OF ANYKIND EVEN IN THE FUTURE,
-NOW THIS,((BY THIS PRESIDENT BEING SET ))MEAN'S IF A MINE IS WORKING REPRESENTED, BY U.M.W.A.,THE COMPANY CAN COME IN TOMORROW AND SIMPLY SAY, YOU NO LONGER HAVE A RIGHT TO REPRESENTATION,AUTO WORKER'S ,STEEL WORKER'S,ALL THE SAME.WHO DOES THIS DICTATOR THINK HE IS,AND WHAT RIGHT DOES HE, OR ANYONE ,HAVE TO TELL PEOPLE ,YOU HAVE ,NO, RIGHT TO COLLECTIVE BARGAINING.
-HAVE WE WENT BACK TO THE 1930' AND 40'S.I KNOW SOME OF YOU ARE SIMPLE MINDED,AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEAN'S,BUT,I WILL SAY THIS IF,IT'S, GOD'S WILL AND WE MAKE FOR ABOUT -5-YR'S OR SO ,YOU WILL REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED,IN WISCONSIN,
-
-THE STATE THAT GOT ,
WORKER'S .
A 40 HR WORK WEEK
-UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE,
-MINIMUM WAGE,
-SAFE WORKING ENVIRONMENT ,
-AND MANY MORE,THING'S LIKE FAIR PAY FOR WOMEN.
WI Governor Walker claims his state is in "fiscal crisis" despite all reports, data and evidence to the contrary. But worse, if revenue is sorely needed, then why would Walker's administration just give out a massive corporate tax cut?

Re: ----DEMOCRAT'S DID NOT DO NEARLY ENOUGH---
The Betrayal of Public Workers
The Great Recession and its aftermath are entering a new phase in the United States, which could bring even more severe assaults on the living standards and basic rights of ordinary people than we have experienced thus far. This is because a wide swath of the country’s policy- and opinion-making elite have singled out public sector workers—including schoolteachers, healthcare workers, police officers and firefighters—as well as their unions and even their pensions as deadweight burdens sapping the economy’s vitality.
We Recommend
Labor's Last Stand (Labor Organizing and Activism, Unions)
As the showdown in Wisconsin demonstrates, progressives must embrace the government workers’ struggle as our own—or else.
It's Not the Party—It's the Policies (Are Republican, Economic Policy, Gap Between Wealth and Poverty, History)
Inequality has risen under Republicans when they’ve embraced neoliberalism.
Social Issues United States healthcare The Great Recession did blow a massive hole in state and municipal government finances, with tax receipts—including income, sales and property taxes—dropping sharply along with household incomes, spending and real estate values. Meanwhile, demand for public services, such as Medicaid and heating oil assistance, has risen as people’s circumstances have worsened. But let’s remember that the recession was caused by Wall Street hyper-speculation, not the pay scales of elementary school teachers or public hospital nurses.
Nonetheless, a rising chorus of commentators charge that public sector workers are overpaid relative to employees in comparable positions in the private sector. The fact that this claim is demonstrably false appears not to matter. Instead, the attacks are escalating. The most recent proposal gaining traction is to write new laws that would allow states to declare bankruptcy. This would let them rip up contracts with current public sector employees and walk away from their pension fund obligations. Only by declaring bankruptcy, Republican luminaries Jeb Bush and Newt Gingrich argued in the Los Angeles Times, will states be able to “reform their bloated, broken and underfunded pension systems for current and future workers.”
WI Governor Walker claims his state is in "fiscal crisis" despite all reports, data and evidence to the contrary. But worse, if revenue is sorely needed, then why would Walker's administration just give out a massive corporate tax cut?
Face De CooloBut this charge is emanating not only from the Republican right; in a front-page story on January 20, the New York Times reported on a more general trend spreading across the country in which “policymakers are working behind the scenes to come up with a way to let states declare bankruptcy and get out from under crushing debts, including the pensions they have promised to retired public workers.”
Considered together, state and local governments are the single largest employer in the US economy. They are also the country’s most important providers of education, healthcare, public safety and other vital forms of social support. Meanwhile, the official unemployment rate is stuck at 9 percent—a more accurate figure is 16.1 percent—a full eighteen months after the recession was declared over. How have we reached the point where the dominant mantra is to dismantle rather than shore up state and local governments in their moment of crisis?

Re: ----DEMOCRAT'S DID NOT DO NEARLY ENOUGH---
Here is a question for you pinenut. The dems signed the bill to make sure that the federal employes( goverment workers) could not have collective bargaining, by the way it was the old peanut farmer who signed this into law, So why should state employes have this right when its on the tax payers dime. Do you think this would have something to do with your hero obumer not speaking out more than he has?

Re: ----DEMOCRAT'S DID NOT DO NEARLY ENOUGH---
Here I will make it simple for you pinenut, do federal employees have colletive bargaining as employees of the federal goverment? The answer is no!! Who pasted the bill making this null, void and done, answer again the Dems. I will not debate unions with you are anybody else because there are pro and cons on both sides. I know from experince I belonged to one of the biggest worldwide unions at one time, the company operated in 183 countries.
