Snow Shoe Ridge's, AKC, Licensed, SPO Trial is back after a two year layoff.
Date: Dec. 17th and 18th, 2016
Time: Pre-Measuring: 7:00 AM-8:00 AM, CST. Classes start at 8:00, CST.
Where: All classes will meet at BORDERLINE BEAGLE CLUB, in Iron Belt, Wisconsin. (smaller class will travel)
Only breakfast will be served.
We wanted to make this trial for the "Hunter" and "Field Trialer." We currently have 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. The forecast is for several more inches, in the next few weeks. (In the North, we always hunt on snow.) The true "Snow Hound/Gun Dog," will excel on snow, under small pack procedures. The hounds "On The Podium," should be the same dogs you take hunting the next day!
This is a different running order, please make note.
Saturday, Dec 17, 2016
13" Males and 15" Males
Sunday, Dec 18, 2016
13" Females and 15" Females
( we chose this running order so measuring will NOT be an issue. You just pre-measure your hound)
** Our CLUB MEMBERS pick the judges. EVERYONE will have a "Level Playing Field!"
13" Males: Kevin Orr & Mitch Anderson
15" Males: Butch Saari & Jim Matuszewski
13" Females: Mike Corrigan & Brad Coonen
15" Females: Aaron Westedt & Blane DeRosso
Hope to see you there..............
Thanks! Joe (906) 285-2759

Love the sound of this trial . The running order allows for premeasure hounds then you know what class to run in. I like the spo format on snow should be solid packs and good races.
Is there still plenty of game in the pens as ussual?

The grounds have plenty of snowshoe hare in them. Should be an excellent trial.

First of all I follow these posts because yes, I own dogs from Green Bay Kennels and I enjoy the hell out of them. Why I am posting is to applaud the effort to acknowledge the fact that the same dogs trialed should also be the ones you hunt. I spent 33 years in the U.S. Air Force and what used to burn me up was the mandatory exercise the whole unit spent one to two years preparing for where the inspectors would tell you what the criteria evaluated was not that used at war but would allow the unit to pass the exercise. Huh!
Gundog trials should emulate the hunt. Trials should be the benchmark used to produce top notch gundogs. If someone wants race dogs bring them on down here to Florida and we will enter them over at Derby Lane and lose a few bets. Then we will make a trip north to some top notch bunny/hare country cut loose some darn good rabbit dogs and have some real fun.
I almost forgot the brace dog lovers. I am sure we could scare up a few tortoise's or an old blue hair to chase.
All I am saying is thanks for re-emphasizing what I believe should be the main reason for conducting these competitions, producing Gundogs!

Thanks Welshman! You are correct, we are trying to emulate, "The Hunt."
As promised, we received 12-14" of snow. (more on the way) We hunted yesterday and had non-stop, four hours of running, with the temperature at 10 degrees.
Results: 3 guys, plus 2 dogs, equals 5 hare. We left plenty for "seed."
We expect the same conditions for our trial. Plenty, plenty of hare in the grounds. Butch packed the trails with the snowmobile. The trails will be in great shape to get around our 80 acre pen. At this time, no snowshoes are needed.
Everyone is welcomed!!!

Good group of guys! I am confident in saying the hound gets judged by fair and honest folks.
Joe K. and Butch Saari are as fine as they come......they would appreciate support at their club....take care and good running to all!

Talked with Joe last night, 18" to 20" of snow on the ground with more on the way, should be a good time!
One of my favorite trial grounds, walk in, sit on the hill and listen to the music.
The hounds usually run hare right past you on the hill as well!

I ran the trails again yesterday with the snowmobile. I will run them again on Friday. You might want to throw your snowshoes in your vehicle just in case. We might get some snow on Saturday again(Or before then)

Yes, we do have approximately a foot and a half of packed snow on the ground. Running conditions will be tough this weekend for our annual Gogebic Range Trial. Air Temps will be below zero on Saturday and slightly warmer on Sunday. (20-30 below with the wind chill factor) Plenty of hare, should be a great trial.
Good Luck To All,
GB
