There is a few laws that I don't agree with here in the mountain state.First off, I don't think that you should have to have a hunting license to run your hounds in the training season[spring,summer,early fall].If I wanted to take my wife with me to sit on the tailgate & listen to my beagles run she can't do it with out a hunting licenses.Even though she isn't doing nothin but sitting there.O.K.,now if she wanted to go with me to watch me harvest a deer now thats o.k. without a hunting licenses.Another stupid law is no runnin on sunday.We do not have sunday hunting in our county but what is the harm in runnin your dogs?Now if I had my hounds on a leash walking them through the fields or brush thats o.k. according to the local DNR.These are just a few of the stupid laws that I would love to see changed.Sometimes I actually believe that they make this stuff up as they go along,I sure would hate to play poker with these fellas. Just had to get it off my chest.

We have that law here in KY. that you have to have hunting lics. to run dogs. We are allowed to hunt on Sunday though.

Dog Training
Persons training dogs shall not have a firearm or other implement for the taking of wildlife in their possession during closed seasons on wild animals and birds. Persons participating in the training of dogs must have a hunting license.

Residents may train dogs and hold field trials on wild animals and birds, except deer and wild turkeys, on private land with the landowner’s written permission or on public lands, at any time.

Nonresidents may train dogs only during the legal small game hunting season.



This is taken from the WVDNR website. I have always trained my dogs on Sunday and will continue to do so. There is nothing in the reulations against it.

I talked to the head man at the main office in Charleston,W.V. & he said persuing game with either a dog or yourself is considered hunting.Which I think is b.s. My definition of hunting is taking game with a firearm or bow.They aren't looking for Bin Laden with out a gun,they are HUNTING him!!!

I will run my hounds on Sunday. If I'm ticketed I'll take it to the court and most likely beat them. Every now and then a new Conseravtion Officer or goup of Officers tries to make thier own interpretation of the law. I have trained beagles for over 37 years and this is the first time anyone has said that you can't do it on Sunday.

one law in wva, that is hard to agree with,if you live in md, and you can not run your dogs on rabbits except in small game season, but a person liveing from wva can buy a licenes and run their dogs in md anytime they want, i think that law needs changed so that everyone is treted equal.

I agree with you 100%.Like I said I think they make a lot of this stuff up as they go along.

i dont know how many DNR OFFICERS or other elected officials read this page put they should, they should lisen to us the people who pay them,are views on some of their actions concerning hunting laws that dont make sense to any one,some bordering states can run their dogs in wva with no problem, why not md if you buy out of state license to do so.

Go to some of the town hall meetings with the DNR and voice your opinions. They are usually held in late March. Usually have 5 across the state all the same week.

I don't like the law that nonrresidents cannot run dogs unless it's in the small game season. I wanted to run my beagles in Ohio once and I called to see if I needed a license and they said No, but, then they told me I couldn't because WV wouldn't let residents of Ohio. So if you live in a state that allows nonresidents to run dogs then Ohio will let you but if your state doesn't then Ohio doesn't either.

It is the reciprocal agreements we have with our neighboring states. I hunted MD and VA for a few years until WV started jacking around with the prices. Now it just not make sense for me to do it. This state has been the one to instigate raises in licenses fees that have cost many of their in state hunters money when going out of state.

It is funny because not all the agreements are the same.

Here you all go. I just got this in a email this morning.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has scheduled six
public meetings across the state to provide hunters, anglers and trappers with
an opportunity to review and comment upon the proposed hunting and fishing
license restructuring plan. These meetings will be held from January 29
through February 3.

"We are pleased to share this innovative license restructuring
proposal with the sportsmen and women of West Virginia and welcome their
thoughts, suggestions and comments on this important initiative," said DNR
Director Frank Jezioro. "Assistance and support from the sporting public will
be essential as we strive to restructure the license system and ensure that
both the Wildlife Resources Section and Law Enforcement Section of DNR remain
viable and effective agencies of state government that foster and promote
conservation, protection and management of the state's natural resources."

An 'Open House' format will be used during each of the scheduled
pubic meetings. People may arrive at any time during the scheduled meeting,
learn of the proposed license restructuring plan and fee structure, discuss
these proposals with wildlife biologists and conservation officers and provide
comment on the proposed changes. This meeting format will provide every member
of the public with the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns, make
suggestions and react to the proposal in a constructive and informal setting.
Many of these conversations and discussions will take place in small groups or
one-on-one with agency staff.

Detailed information on the hunting and fishing license
restructuring proposal is available at any of the DNR District Offices, Elkins
Operations Center, and Charleston Headquarters or online at
http://www.wvdnr.gov/licenseproposal. In addition to the series of public meetings
being held from January 29 through February 3, written comments from the public
are also welcome and may be sent to the following address: License Proposal, WV
DNR, Capitol Complex, Building 3, Room 812, Charleston, WV 25305. The DNR is
also accepting comment via email at the following address:
licenseproposal@wvdnr.gov. All persons interested in attending the 'Open
Houses' scheduled in their area should note the following list of meeting dates
and locations.
