California Governor Vetoes Ammo Registration Bill- (09/20)

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that would have obstructed the purchase of firearm ammunition by law abiding citizens.



Senate Bill 1152, introduced by Sen. Jack Scott, D-Pasadena, would have required firearm owners to register and provide a thumbprint to vendors when purchasing handgun ammunition. Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill on September 20.



The registration process would have required that sportsmen give their name, address, date of birth and driver’s license number. Licensed hunters were exempted from the thumbprint requirement, but would have still had to register to purchase ammunition. No other state collects this information on ammunition sales.



The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and other conservation groups called sportsmen to action to defeat SB 1152. It passed the Senate and Assembly this summer. Fortunately, Gov. Schwarzenegger saw no public safety benefit and vetoed the bill. He stated that the registration process has already been considered and rejected by the federal government as unworkable.
