A bill that would further restrict trapping in Rhode Island has been introduced in the House of Representatives.
House Bill 6046, introduced by Rep. Amy Rice, D-Newport, will ban the use of body gripping traps. Rhode Island has already restricted foothold traps, requiring a permit from the Director of Environmental Management for their use. House Bill 6046 makes no exceptions.
“The anti’s believe they can erode Rhode Island’s trapping heritage, one piece at a time,” said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance director of state services. “House Bill 6046 is not about sound wildlife management or the welfare of animals, but rather the achievement of a political agenda to end hunting and trapping.”
The prohibition of trapping would rob the Department of Environmental Management of safe and humane tools for successful wildlife management. In states where trapping has been severely restricted or banned there has been a marked increase in rabies cases and property damage by nuisance wildlife.
House Bill 6046 awaits action in the House Committee on Health, Education, and Welfare.
Take Action! Rhode Island sportsmen are urged to take action and ask their representatives to oppose HB 6046. Explain that the bill will ban a safe and effective wildlife management tool.
