Saturday's hunt with boys

Post by mybeagles »

They are learning the rabbits likely route of travel and positioning themselves in the right spots. This weekend the debate turned to who was more successful....going 3/3 or going 6/10.....In the end I had a blast watching the show! Not the least of which was a 7 month old pup that's tearing it up.....

All I can say is, "you'll never go hungry with a team like that".
Great job boys!

My mybeagles, what a great photo. What kind of surprise, is Santa gonna be leaving those fine young hunters under the tree?????

I always looked for the little square boxes that weighed about a pound under the tree. When I opened and it said "Winchester #6 shot", I was thrilled.
Boys that age need their own hunting kit, I had a wooden ammo box for my shells, gun cleaning kit, gun rack, each houndsman should have their very own lead strap. I remember putting bread sacks over my feet as there was always one boot or the other that would leak water in...lol
My first hunting vest took the place of the binder-twine I used to lash the game over my shoulder with and the shell holders meant I could carry more shell then the 4 I could get in each pocket. Boys need lot of energy while out hunting so bags of jerky kept the hunger pain away while out afield.
Yup, a boy needs his own hunting kit... ;)

I try to avoid the commercialization of Christmas so they get items throughout the hunting season as need arises. This December we are doing a 7 day hare hunt in a cabin that we have been planning for a while. They are sporting some new chaps from Plum Creek Supplies this year along with the Dan's game vests they picked up last fall.

We are working on proper clean up with gun cloth and Remington Oil but little too early to be disassembling and ramming rods..

They took dad's refresher course on Rabbit cleaning. They still haven't mastered the art of that but to be honest I think they do a better job than what I could do at that age. I plucked my first rabbit....took long time and I had hair everywhere.

Its been a great start to the fall season and has exceeded all my expectations. Slowing down to take it all in while keeping your head above water in this fast paced world seems to be the challenge.

Happy Hunting!

I can see the personality differences on their faces with the boy on the left sayin, "I GOT THIS" and the one on the right sayin "I DON'T THINK SO". Great picture that the boys will cherish when they get older as I wish I had such a picture of my brother and my dad doing what we loved back in the day. That would be a GREAT Christmas gift for both of them that will only be greater as it ages.

Wardog,

You nailed it....Walter on right went 3/3 and doesn't shoot unless he is sure to connect. Andrew on the left is more proactive and bounces from fence row to fence row in hopes of connecting. He went 6/10 shooting.

Sunday was quite a different story. 2" of "Puppy Snow" had the dogs moving much faster and the rabbits full steam ahead. They went a combined 1/8 and had to eat some crow from dad on the way home.
