Patch Dog Crosses?

Post by jaysemien19 »

I know some Patch dogs owners don't like to breed outside the patch bloodline. I would like to know what kind of patch crosses were made and how did the pups turn out. Thanks in Advanced for the feedback.

in my experience the out crosses can produce better dogs. I like if i had an outstanding patch female i would outcross with northway, branko or big meadows.

I got to be friends with William Bredemeier Sr., he told me no cross had ever improved his hounds like the cross onto Bare Foot King Patch. King was a cross of Patch onto Pearson Creek. King's sire was Bare-Foot Blaze Patch. Going back into Blaze's pedigree the forth generation, Swift Eagle Patch(Blue Cap) is all over the sire's side along with the Blue Caps bitches. HEAVY Blue Cap. William told me he had bred to alot of the most poplar hounds in his day, even making the trip up to breed to Benet's "Warfield Red" hound and he often spoke of his uncle's German beagles but in the end, he always went back to King as his best cross, overall, he said it raised his standard in hounds...

I had spoke to Mike Crabtree about breeding to Honey. She always seemed to produce with the outcrosses he made. Would have liked to put her back on a patch hound once before she got killed.

We line-breed off PennyRoyal Patch Casey. Mr. Capozzi verified every hound in his pedigree was from the old patch kennel and thought the kennel deserved some credit for producing such a hound. Most of us try to put patch in the naming of our hounds in some form to give credit back to the old patch kennel, but we are often accused of trying to "ride the coattail" of the name. Well, it's also a way to draw your attention to a hound you seen and liked, to study it's pedigree and find what behind the hound and how it may match-up with what your breeding. I had my first patch litters in Feb.96' breeding these hounds in earnest, a hundred years after Randall first put the patch name on a hound. Thanks to the rabbit hunters that have bred and kept these hounds alive, sharing them with their brothers and like kind, I hope they continue on another 118 yrs...

Mr patch just brought up another point why i think big meadows blood crosses good on the patch dogs . alot of them contain Bredemeier blood in them. I will hopefully be using superman as a stud in the spring. He is a reproducer. and i like what i have seen coming off him.

Anytime you cross a Patch hound with any other breed make sure that breed has hunt, brains, a good nose and knows how to use it with some form of line control, that's basically all the Patch line is missing so it helps to breed that into your Patch hounds when possible.

Likeemfast..... I'm a patch breeder right below you in Maryland. Sounds like you've been around the wrong dogs. I breed for brains FIRST!! WE can meet in the middle or I can come to you. We can gun hunt, pack vs pack, your best dog vs my best patch hound, or however suits you. One thing for sure and two for certain MY Patch hounds WILL change your statement.

Happy hunting,

Now that's an invitation anyone with a little bit of a Competitiveness in their blood cant refuse. Heck I may start jogging to get myself in shape for this, ........ then again nah, I will bring the subs (submarine sandwiches). Jonathan, I have hundreds of acres of private land to run on, with coal fields, dirt roads, overgrown fields, swamps and hundreds of acres of cutoffs, with rabbits that run. Come run after these deer hunters get outta the way.

Likeemfast, I ACCEPT your offer. I'll even take off work so we can hunt 3 days. Granddaddy always said "A blind hog can find an acorn every once in a while." I'll bring the beer and chips. My patch hounds run in all of your terrains you descibed. When is your deer season over?? I just wish I had an extra pup in the kennel to bring because he'd have your name on it.

Keep'em in the brush and hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Mike, I have that cross already off of Keenams Redmann 2. They are some hard hunting hounds.

Big Mike asked if anyone had made Patch x Satsuma crosses.
I'll tell you one person that for sure hasn't and that's Mel Faust owner of Satsuma kennels.
Years back I had gone down to Louisiana to attend the Southern Large Pack Championship that was being held at Mel's running grounds.
It was my first time at Mel's and he was showing me around his kennels.Hard not to notice that every beagle in his kennel was either red and white or lemon and white.
I innocently asked if there was a lot of Patch breeding behind his hounds and he informed me in no uncertain terms that there was "not one drop"!
