Hi everyone... i have a questin

Post by Owl Creek »

I hope everyone is well.
I have not been on the ol TAB for a long time.
just been laying low for the most part.

But I picked up a new pup this weekend and with fall coming on its perked me up a bit.
(little woody you would love this one I think )

here is my question,

The vet once told me if I kept my hunting dog in the house he/she would not get a winter coat .
and I guess that would be hard on them . ( the wife reminded me of this yesterday not that she dont like them in the house cuz she does.)

but I am pretty sure a lot of you do.
??? so is this a issue or not??
thanks in advance.

steve, I have two in the house and two in kennels. I would agree with your vet. My two in the house do not get winter coats. I do run them as well in the winter but have a subaru wagon that that i use to haul them mostly. I figure when they are running they are gonna get hot no matter how cold out it is or if they have a winter coat or not but but I am cognoscente of it when i'm hauling/or leaving them out for any period of time when they are not running in the winter. I won't get into a debate about them hunting harder or not but to me it makes no difference where they sleep so long as they get there consistent ground time. just my .02 cents which isn't much! good luck with whatever decision you make.

that makes sense. mine ride in the dog box in the back of the truck.
I would hope the other dogs would keep each other warm.

Hey Steve, if your going to turn that little guy loose here in Ky with the Jadys Express you better get him outside and let him get that winter coat cause there might not be any of these dogs back far enough to be close enough to him to keep him warm!!!!  Just kidding Ol' buddy, That's a great looking puppy...Keep me updated! I'll warn Thunder he's coming!

I think they do better when they are outside. Their body has to adjust to the temperatures more than in a
climate controlled house. When it is really cold I put two in each kennel.
By the way I got your text and sent you an email.

Imo,a dog will shed it's summer coat and growth of hollow haired under fur will happen due to sunlight hours and not because of colder weather....I have house hounds and they have no problem in the winter hunting, staying in box during week long hunts etc....some dogs have little under fur to begin with.

His sire is Laneline yellowcreek Dingus . FC Wooten's Barney X Indian Run Cheyanne ( she was John Toy yellow creek stock)
his dam is Laneline lady of Oz. Hills Shakerag Ozzie X Alamo Creek Lady ( she is old Yellow creek.) Ozzie was Dingus Mcrae/Gay blood.

V. nice looking pup; like them ears :)
We have some young females with similar bloodlines (but not both top and bottom as this was first cross). Our Dingus comes thru Close Call Girl, and instead of Ozzie/Gay ours has Trimmer/Branko. The dam's YC is pretty much the same. Hoping for lots of fun with mine, wish you the same with yours.

Hey Steve. That's a good looking pup for sure. You might take him and get his ears shortened so he don't step on them! Then he'll be able to keep up with Pauls dogs!
