Flu Shot Info

How the vaccine works:

Influenza vaccine is produced by growing the virus in eggs. The virus is
killed and processed to create the vaccine, which is given by injection
under the skin. The body then produces antibodies to the virus over the
next two to four weeks. If the immunized person then comes into contact
with the influenza virus, the antibodies attack and kill the virus
before it has a chance to cause infection. The vaccine contains the 3
most likely strains to be active during the "flu season".

Why the shortage:

Almost half of the nation's flu vaccine will not be delivered this year.
Chiron, a major manufacturer of flu vaccine, will not be distributing
any influenza vaccine this flu season. Chiron was to make 46-48 million
doses vaccine for the United States. Chiron is a British company.
Recently British health officials stopped Chiron from distributing and
making the vaccine when inspectors found unsanitary conditions in the
labs. Some lots of the vaccine were recalled and destroyed.

Why is our vaccine made in the UK and not the US?

The major pharmaceutical companies in the US provided almost 90% of the
nations flu vaccine at one time. They did this despite a very low profit
margin for the product. Basically, they were doing us a favor. In the
late 80's a man from North Carolina who had received the vaccine got the
flu.

The strain he caught was one of the strains in that years vaccine made
by a US company. What did he do? He sued and he won. He was awarded
almost $5 million! After that case was appealed and lost, most US
pharmaceutical companies stopped making the flu vaccine. The liability
out weighed the profit margin. Since UK and Canadian laws prohibit such
frivolous law suits UK and Canadian companies began selling the vaccine
in the US.

By the way...the lawyer that represented the man in the flu shot law
suit was then a young ambulance chaser by the name of

John Edwards. Name Familiar?

Kerry's latest ad-bashing blames Bush for the Shortage - But Edwards
is quiet as a church mouse about it!

TEd you know I like you as a person, but I fail to understand the moral behind your post. So, because John Edwards represented a client and won a case, we now have no flu vaccine? We bragg about the U.S. having the best criminal justice system in the world, did the system not work in this case? I take it that a trial was held and a jury found the company negligent, and awarded a judgement to the plaintiff. That is our criminal justice system at work. If it hadn't been John Edwards it would have been someone else so to me it is kind of a moot point. If at the time they(the drug company) made some type of guarantee that you wouldn't catch that strand of flu and a person did, then it is false advertisement. I don't know the details and I am sure it is a lot deeper than that, but I don't see how a lawyer can take the blame for that, after all we do have the best criminal justice system, right? If we do, then we have to take the bitter with the sweet.

Lawyers in the USA rule, Lawyers can make you a very rich person overnight. Lawyers and Libs even made it easier picking out a CD with that warning lable. Lawyers allways have your best interest when you can put cash in their pockets "medical field, prescription drugs, insurance companies, nothing wrong with this i guess laws the law.Lawyers will be used to take religion out of schools,If your a good parent you will raise your kids right regardless of this right.Lawyers run adds to sue this company right after the viox warns people of risk, once again back to cash.lawyers in the the U.S. why didnt we use them to sue the terrorist. We soon could have two running the country, I wonder will they actually have the balls to work outside the USA when the rules to the game change.Being a coward in this case will be worse than being a brute.

Big Dog,
I have the greatest respect for you and wouldn't want to loose you as a friend, especially over an election. I actually just pasted an e-mail I received from one of the wisest men I know-Alabama John. Let's just agree to disagree and remain friends.

Red,
No, I am not a republican. I am a democrat. But first, I am a Christian, and my priorities in this election are abortion, gay rights, and gun control. Two of these three I feel, that it is my responsibility as a Christian to vote for the person that I feel will do the most to keep them under control. I'm just passing on some info, in case some of you share the same priorities as I, but might not have made your mind up as to how to vote. Hey, if you mind is already made up, don't let any facts confuse you. LOL

Ted,
I mean no disrespect in asking this question, but I just did an assignment for my education class in which I encountered an article that stated that most people go to the Internet for all their information and usually take the first information they find as gospel no matter what the source. My question is this: Where does one go to verify that Edwards represented this case against the drug company? Again, I mean no disrespect, but it seems to me that Bush would have jumped all over this when Kerry brought it up in the debate. I have read your posts for quite some time and you always bring thoughtful, insightful information to the table. I hope that you take this in the spirit it is given, that I would like to make an honest follow-up on this. Thank you, David Ramey Also, Big Dog is correct that this is the greatest legal system in the world. IF I may, it may even be the greatest legal system that has ever existed. In order to punish those who commit crimes, it is necessary that some are not punished by the same laws. Otherwise, police could break down the doors of the innocent and execute them on the spot. My wife works in law, and she is constantly reminding me of this. She also becomes frustrated when someone uses loopholes to avoid punishment. We all become frustrated when someone is awarded millions in personal injury when it is obvious they don't deserve it, but by the same premise as I have stated, some become injured and have no other way to survive except by the $$ punishment of a guilty, negligent party. We all must take the bad with the good. If anyone is concerned about people getting what is coming to them, I will be glad to explain some of what God says about separating the sheep from the goats someday. Until then, we are to live peaceably with all men, as much as we can on our part.

Crew chief, If kerry wins your right this will be something to see if he can back up all his promises. I live in ohio and I would haft to say the job loss situation is mostly because the state, local, government is corrupt. I think people love money more than life. I live in a small town and everyone see schools public going broke But the facts are that the person in charge of the money takes millions and fudge the books, after the fact somehow this is a presidents fault. The local taxpayers are ask to pay for this mis use of funds this is wrong.Taxes cant stop the problem or be the answer.

When i go to my club meetings, those in charge of the money have the books laid out for all to look at, and the money is always accounted for. I dont know how a person would go to the city and schools and ask to show the books and keep them honest. How does this system work?

NAFTA is working, just took a few years to get greedy americans to move jobs.

It appears that everything has a twist. The Republicans blam it on the lawyers and the Democrats blam it on BIG money, check out this article http://www.theleftcoaster.com/archives/003044.html for the Republican advantage. As far as the Republican's bashing trial lawyers and the legal system maybe they have forgotten just how they got into office in the first place. Anybody remember about 4 years ago when George W. Bush got less than the plurality of the votes and had to go to the Supreme Court to decide the outcome? I would have to say that a majority of those being appointed by Republicans was also an advantage but least we NOT forget they are lawyers too. Talk about Flip-Flop. Lets get real folks it makes no difference as to what party we are talking about in this country they are BOTH liers and out to line their pockets on the backs of the middle working class Americans. When are we going to open our eyes and demand that elections are fair and equitable to ALL. These two parties will not even allow a third party to participate or have an equal opportunity to be elected. I think it's time that we take the BIG party money out of politics and place ALL campaign contributions into a general fund to be divided up equally among those with the credentials to run. This will eliminate the advantage of one party having more money to campaign but will still let those BIG donors donate till their hearts content. If their money is not targeted toward a specific individual or party I wonder if they will even donate the Big bucks as they will not have any leverage of getting something in return when ALL candidates share their money equally. It's time that we, the working middle class taxpayers, take back our Government from these blood sucking elite, leeches that have NEVER performed a good days work in their lives.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. 2 A time to be born and a time to die. 3 A time to kill and a time to heal. 8 A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3.
