just found this board. I already belong to another but thought I would register here as well.
Im from Alaska, and am working with my first beagle. Today he ran his first Hare, then his second then his third. I have read and heard how good a feeling it is when your dog opens up for the first time and man I am a believer!
I have been hunting with other beagles before but I have never got that excited/proud when they were on a rabbit. guess it just has to be your dog.
You guys will see me more around. If theyre are any beaglers in Alaska on this board drop me a line. Id like to meet ya! I have been hoping to run into someone beagling here but no luck yet. Maybe I am the only one.
Course I ran into 3 guys hunting today with 22s. they heard my dog going full cry. I told them it was the 3rd for the day. when I asked how many they got they said none. I might have just made 3 more beaglers after today!

Where did you get that dog? That sounds like a dog that I would like a brother or sister out of....

LOL!
I got this dog last year about this time. last winter we had alot of snow and it was always real cold out. I would take him out now and again but trips werent productive.
then this summer I was always pretty busy and only took him occasionaly and he usually just wanted to play grab-ass with my german shorthair.
Now after an entire year I have really devoted my weekends for this dog. I think this weekend was probably his 8th one out since the end of september.
So really I think he started fast, since he finally got an honest oppurtunity.
for those that care I got him from

Here is a link to his pedigree. the dog in the pic is his brother.

Some how i had figured there was alot of Branko's blood in that hound. That
don't make him a bad hound at all, i've got 2 in my pens.

Keep us posted on how the rabbit hunting goes for you in Alaska. I have wondered how the hunting would be in Alaska. What kind of terrain do find them in. Cedar Swamps, thick pines or is it more open tundra type of terrain?
Do you have alot of rabbits there in Alaska?

thanks for the round of Hellos everyone!
Ill definitley keep you guys posted about the hunting and dog progress. Starting next weekend

Ill take some pics too. I really wished I had my camera yesterday.
The terrain varies quite a bit but mostly I find the Rabbits (Snowshoe Hares actually) In dense Alders and Spruce forest bordering on swamps and bogs (muskeg for those familiar)
the Hare population is quite cyclic. Around anchorage where I live and hunt though We havent had a true population spike since the early 80's. The population seems pretty stable.
however the farther north (read less populated) you go the more likely you are to experience the classic boom or barren cylces. Last year my buddy was doing a motorcyle trip to canada and on his way past tok (about 5 hours from me) he said everyone slowed down so they could watch for rabbits. He said the highway was just covered in them!
I will make that drive up there soon to see it first hand. If I wait to long I will have to wait another 7 years to see them that thick again!
Anyway if anyone has any more questions on Alaska feel free to ask!
Also I see the "wabbit" in alot of the posts, including mine, is that some sort of prank the forum does? Pretty funny if thats the case, if not then I really am becoming Elmer Fudd like my wife says!

Hi Matt. Congratulations on your hound. I lived in the Fairbanks area for 6 years a lifetime ago. I wish I had discovered beagles by then. The folks that have never seen a boom cycle of rabbits in Alaska would not believe it. I ran into an area near Ft Greely one time that was as Matt described. There were hundreds of rabbits on the side of the road. I stopped and looked into the woods, and the land was just alive with them. It was bizzare. The poor dogs wouldn't know what to do in a situation like that. Matt, I haven't lived in Alaska for a long time, and have no contacts there anymore. I am trying to organize a week long duck hunting/salmon fishing/ptarmagin shooting/possible caribou hunt. (this is obviously in the very early stages of planning). We are looking at maybe September of '07. Can you reccomend any guides? Web sites would be best, or I'll make phone calls. I'm especially having trouble with the duck hunting guides. Thanks in advance for any help and good luck with your beagle. Ben Wallace.
