A old guy told me that if I put a cap full of bleach in my dogs water bucket every time I water them it would keep the green stuff and all the bacteria out of their water! He said he's done it for years with no problems! Does anyone else do this or have you heard of it?

Use apple cider vinegar. Cap full or lil more each time you water dogs.
I know for fact it helps keep bowl from turning green, but also heard it can be good for dogs as well.

He said use a CAP full in a 2 gal bucket! Not a cup full! The cap being the lid off the bleach jug!

Do this, works great, vinegar works as well...
Cap is plenty. I put about a full cap in 4 gallons. Sunlight burns of the excess so it is essentially purifying the water as well.
Good luck!

Been putting it in the cattle tanks on the Farm for years as well.

Bleach kills all bacteria including good digestive bacteria. Vinegar builds good bacteria.

Bleach is a form of chlorine so it will kill a lot of microorganisms in the water. The problem is, it's poisonous at too high a level. Chlorine will combine chemically with organic material in the water (such as the green algae) and form chloramines which are thought to cause cancer in humans. What I do in the warmer months of the year when algae grows on the sides of the water bowls is scrub them about once a month (or as often as needed) with bleach water and a scouring pad then rinse with clear water. It only takes a few minutes and it's nice to keep the bowls clean. I also think it's good to give the dogs fresh water every day instead of just topping off what's already in the bowls. Then, when I run the dogs, they drink out of every scanky muddle puddle they can find anyway so I wonder why I even bother to keep their bowls clean!
A word of CAUTION! Don't mix bleach with other household cleaners! When bleach is combined with ammonia or acids it gives off deadly chlorine gas!

not to argue with your point but i produce cl2 for a living and the amount you would have to drink to posion yourself or dogs would be tremindous. if cl2 in drinking water cause cancer good by everyone because everone that is on city water is drinking anywhere from 2 to 4 ppm in ever glass full.1 cap full of bleach in a 3 gal pail is only about .5ppm so its fine.remeber your not using cl2 gas just bleach which is only about 1% cl2 rest is disilled water.

Apple Cider Vinegar is good too. Use both and swap them around, alternating. We humans dring the Apple Cider Vinegar/water mixture also.
Interestuing how dog men and women will worm and doctor to rid parasites for everything on the farm and do it religiously, but never think to worm themselves.

No way would I put bleach in my dogs water as it kills all bacteria good and bad. A brush once a week cleans out my dogs water bowl just fine!
Thanks,
Bob

I work as an environmental health specialist for the health department I have experience disinfecting wells and checking bleach residual for sanitizers for restaurants , public pools and day care centers. To much bleach is not healthy might even damage their vocal chords or cause irritation to the esophagus uretha or bladder. You only need regular chlorox bleach remove the cap from the jug pour half a cap in a 5 gallon bucket fill with water you will need to change it every 3 days as the sun evaporates the bleach. You only need 1 ppm to kill bacteria and control algae in water. Pool shock is highly concentrated do not use it period. For disinfecting kennels of course its the amount is stronger.Better yet do like the guy said use a brush change the water daily or every other so you dont upset the beneficial microbes in your dogs gut or harm the digestive track or system. When I inspect public swimming pools, to pass the water chlorine residual has to be between 1 and 5 ppm You dont let your kids drink swimming pool water right?
