Carring on traits???

On a litter of pups, who do they usually or mostly pull their traits from (Performance traits) sire, dam, grand parents, G grandparents? I know there are a lot of factors that play in, but on average from y'all's experience.

Example: I own two hounds. They are half brothers. Same dam, but different sires. Both have same line control, and running abilitys, but one will out hunt the other. So did the one that hunt less, did he pull that from his sires side?

I know breedings are a crap shoot. I know you might have 1-2 out of litter that just may be more dominant than others.
But my question is do they pull more from 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generations?

Appreciate all opinions!

Preacher, thank you for info. So on average they pull mostly from sire/dam.
Going back to my example, that would mean the hound that hunted less, prob pulled his trait from his sire. Cause both had same dam.

Reason being, I'm going start line breeding some hounds, just wanna make sure I make as many forward progress moves as I can.

Thanks preacher.

I don't believe it's quite as simple as you've concluded with your example. You can have full littermates and one may not hunt as hard as the others. I do believe the parents tend to have more influence than grandparents, etc., but even then it all depends on the hounds in the background and how the genetics end up meshing together. Some hounds may throw traits you see three generations down the road, while others may not.

Well that’s a tough question but think about it in a different fashion would you want to breed to an outstanding dog from a mediocre line, or a mediocre specimen from an outstanding line that has bred many champions. I think the family tree is a better judge at what will be passed along than what you see in either parent. So many variables that are hidden to the eye make breeding what it is. Personally I would breed to the mediocre dog from the outstanding line. Just my 2 cents.

Ole mule I'm right there with ya on picking a dog with good line of genetics/ traits.
And KILLNTM, I also agree with you on it all depends how the genetics mesh up together.

These two hounds are both from very well known bloodlines. Both have proven dogs from their line, along with proven littermates. Hound A: has good line control, good hunt Hound B: which is half bro, good line control, but less hunt.
Hound A: with proven littermates and proven past
Hound B: with proven littermates and whole bunch of past

So from what I gather is Hound B either pulled traits from his sire or was lil less dominant than other littermates???
