has trialing beagles today. changed from past ones.
i just wonder what traits have changed in todays trialing beagles from ones 20 yrs ago . and if they have are they better or worse traits. iam always wondering how we new guys are doing breeding quality hounds. compared to breeders from the past.

I will not follow where the path may lead; but I will go where there is no path, and leave a trail. LORD HELP ME BE THE PERSON MY DOG THINKS I,AM!!!

In talking with older more mature beaglers, the common problems I hear of are...
1. too fast
2. not enough nose
3. not enough hunt
I wouldn't know as I've only had beagles since 1992.

Scott, started putting on trials here in 87 and what I ve notice is two weeks before hunting season and two weeks after is were you will see a lot more people at trials. It comes and go with people at trial.I ve had some that its there first trial and win the trial and never came back.Just did not care about trials. They said the thrill of winning a trial just want there.Alot of rabbit hunters in the next month will put there beagles up and grab the fishing poles or other stuff and want run there dogs till this fall.I ve had trials in the fall and here someone say.I not turn my dogs out last hunting season. I am not going to name the format but you can do these trials in that year and forget the rest of the time. Now when I open the pens up for anybody to run dogs I just knew that in hunting season nobody will be running there dogs in hunting season.because I knew they were hunting.Man Was I wrong.I found out there are more people that runs beagle that don t hunt that does. I started doing a trial call two Couple Pack in 2001. In this trial you will have guys that run there dogs all year long and when you put on a trial they will be there. In the twenty some years of doing trials its the same.People will like it or they want. But what I seen sat and ask at a trial they were 31 packs at the trial and I try this fall to do a licn trial and had 11 pack.in a two couple pack trial. They said they like a fun trial better. No paper work, and bigger trophy.A guy told me sat.I drove 5 hr to get to the licn trial and got 3nd and just got a ribbon. I started giving out big trophy in 97 and I remember one trial had around 180 dogs. This was a fun trial. Most Around here love a nice trophy at a fun trial better than any licn trial to get points.I rented my pen out a few years ago for a AKC SPO trial and it want long I seen some that when they went the bathroom theres did not stink they were so into the trial part they forgot the people around them unless you were inters in buying a dog .i believe they were confuse filling out all that paper work. To me I love the fellowship.I think its the same now but I see a change coming. There will be something on the dogs were you will not need a judge and everybody can see the trial at the club house on TV.

I think it's changed for the better.I'm old enough to remember when the old time beaglers, the guys that bred and raised gundogs in this region considered anything that was registered or out of registered hounds junk. There was a long period of time the only AKC registered hounds that were bred for cottontail were brace hounds. The AKC gundog movement in the 70's and 80's changed everything.Other registeries and formats came around a little later. There are more choices now out there for registered beagles than has ever been.No matter what style you like there is a format that your hound can compete in if you want to.The different lines are getting more set now also I think. If you look back to when the SPO movenent started and look at what they had to breed with. You'll see brace, hare and show blood being mixed trying to get what they were looking for. There had to be a lot of variation in the litters.

Trialing is in constant change. Like Pilot said, many years ago, they ran their hunting dogs at trials. Then the fad turned to dogs that just walked and boo hooed. The gun dog movement started. For a short time you could run the same dogs in the deep south, midwest association, and LPH Trials. Once the SPO movement started and began gaining popularity, many of the the brace folks moved over and began to dominate the SPO Trials. The Midwest maintained the same type dogs and maybe increased their speed. ARHA was born. There is now a Trail available any style/speed desired.

thanks for ur input thats kinda my opinion . i put this up because i had a guy stop at my house cause he seen my beagles in there kenels and he wanted to see if id sell one . as soon as i said i trial he said well ok havea niceday . so i asked why the sudden change . he told me us trialers ruined the breed . there not like the old time gun beagles. so i just wanted to see what others thought. again thnks.
