Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Since I haven't seen all formats run, I'm curious how to rate the below formats on a conservative basis; especially some of the middle formats. Would you say this is the order from most to less conservative? I'm not trying to create controversy, I'm trying to get information for myself. I'm sure some will think that some of the below formats should be switched. That's fine; that just means they're close & that's Ok for my purpose.
AKC Brace
UBGF
AKC SPO
NKC Progressive Pack
NKC Little Pack
UKC
AKC Midwest SPO
AKC Large Pack
AKC Brace
UBGF
AKC SPO
NKC Progressive Pack
NKC Little Pack
UKC
AKC Midwest SPO

Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Both U.B.G.F. and Mid-West are run under the same set of A.K.C. S.P.O. rules. The two associations just happen to have their own interpretations as to what degree those rules are applied. The U.B.G.F. leans to a much more conservative interpretation and the Mid-West allows more leeway.
I would say that the A.K.C. Mid-West format is actually more conservative in their hound's running styles than is the N.K.C. Little Pack.I might even go further and say that the A.K.C. Large Pack is more conservative in their judging and a hound's adherence to the written rule book than is the N.K.C. Little Pack.In Little Pack most anything goes as long as the hound is scoring [ strikes, jumps and checks ],style be irrelevent.
You really need to look at specific associations that run under the rules to get a good idea of who may prefer a more conservative or less conservative dog to win/place under their judges.

Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
good comments on NKC little pack. I'm especially interested in a UBGF, AKC SPO (not Midwest) & PP comparison. I'm also interested in where UKC fits in, where if I remember correctly you call your dog & first dog across a trail gets points.
Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
You strike your dogs in UKC, 1st 100 pts, 2nd 75pts and so on.
They are then scored on the "line", when rabbit is marked or seen, first on line 100pts, and so on.
I am not sure how they score a check or if they score a check.
UKC H&H is big around me.
Good luck!

I agree with Shady Grove, but you have left some out.
I would say it is more like this
AKC Brace
AKC SPO
...UBGF
...Deep South
...Mid Atlantic
...PBGA
ARHA Progressive Pack
UKC Performance Pack
...NE SPO
UKC Hunting Beagle
AKC Large Pack
...Maine
...New Hampshire & Vermont & Mass
...Southern LP
...NY
...Midwest SPO
...Michigan
ARHA Little Pack
That is how I would rate them. Please understand it is all about the judges. If you have 2 judges from the Midwest judging a UBGF trial, the winning hounds will roll. That's why the Midwest is not allowed to send judges to the SPO Nationals any longer. Ant that is why I have not returned to the SPO Nationals They lean heavily towards UBGF, but that's a another story.

Every UBGF dog I have seen is one step above a brace walkie talkie, is this the norm for that format ?

Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Yep, that is why they are second on the list.
Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
The UKC H & H have different rules then the UKC performance pack.
in performance pack you don't strike your dog.
it is judge more like the progressive pack in arha.
I like both the PP formats , and would like to try Mid west.

HatterasBob,
Where does MidWest SPO fit on your list? Also, do you know what conference, out of the 4 you mentioned under AKC SPO, the MonroeToledo club in Michigan fits under? what about Great Lakes Beagle club?
Thanks,

ARHA also has a Brace format that runs about the speed as UBGF.
R & D Kennel , I would say the dog you saw was not the norm for UBGF. All that I have seen ( and I've seen quite a few) were very competitive in the Progressive pack formats. Not front runners, but usually mid to back of the pack runners ,that excelled at picking up the checks.

What about ARHA Big Pack? I'll never forget the time a Little Pack judge told me that Big Pack could ruin a good Little Pack dog.

Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Big Mike I run in place where many UBGF guys run. My dogs are greyhounds in comparison. This list is the exact reason I laugh when I see people Ranking dog speed 1-10 . Pkc is missing btw . Also I want to state one of the fastest dogs chasing a Rabbit today is a UKC hound yet UKC is mid ranking. I feel speed is irrelevant in most of these discussions. The topic is too subjective . Just my opinion

Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Just a question, the UKC H&H sounds like it's ran a lot like a PKC hunt. Are they close to same?
In our area we mainly have LP hunts and PKC. If you wanna run diff format usually have to travel a bit.

What format promotes a dog right between Mid-West and UGBF?
Keep the best, cull the rest!
Re: Formats - most conservative to less conservative?
Anyone seen the ARHA Gun Dogs run? No clubs in this area,I've seen some video of them. They seemed like they had real decent foot with excellent line control.Very few checks and those were short.Kept a lot of pressure on the rabbits.Any other formats out there close to the same? I've had several people say that they are real close to the ARHA PP hounds when they started out.
