try going to another vet that know what to look for. ive got the run around before.., losing a dog that was easily diagnosed in 10 minutes. spend the money for the blood work up. kidney / liver failure shows the signs you describe. hope it works out for you...

Sounds like your vet is dropping the ball and did a less than half hearted attempt at diagnosing anything. If his teeth are that bad, however, that very well may be a contributing factor to his illness. If that is the case, in my opinion, an immediate, thorough teeth cleaning and a heavy round of a broad antibiotic may clear it up. Certainly the firt thing you want to do is get those damned teeth cleaned. You can do it yourself with a good dental tool and pick up the anti-biotics yourself too. I have heard of other cases where dogs were literally down and out and once the teeth were cleaned and antibiotics given in conjuntion with an I.V., they bounced right back. In your case, it sounds like he is going down hill fast. I would give him an I.V. injection a couple times of day (you can do this yourself too, look it up on youtube - farmers do it all the time.)

On a side note, most people never look into their dogs mouth until they start having problems, I was guilty of this in the past as well. Once I had a few dogs with issues because of horrible teeth I started scaling their teeth every few months (pain in the A$$ and you can never really do it often enough). Now I feed them raw whenever I can and when I can't they get beef scraps and knuckle bones from a butcher on a regular basis. All of my dogs now have pearly white teeth and I will never scale a tooth again - just food for thought....

Dog nearly died while I was at a funeral. Fiancé took it to a vet and demanded an X-ray. Sure enough spotted the problem in 5 seconds. Ruptured diaphragm due to blunt force trauma and a sticker lodged through chest. His organs are in his heart cavity and he had 1.2 liters of fluid in his pleural cavity.

Emergency surgery with a ten percent chance of living through surgery. If he woulda done X-ray last time it woulda been over 90 percent!

He pulled through surgery Saturday morning and is clinging to life. Get said he has some serious fight. Said any other dog woulda stopped breathing days ago with the pressure. Said it probably felt like a 200lb weight was on his heart. He is on oxygen and major antibiotics and will be for 6 months if he even lives. It's about A 6o percent chance.

No tellin if he will ever run again after all that. My fiancé had to sit in parking lot for an hour before she could drive cause of the tears. Pretty bad deal. Now it's up to him if he has more fight in him. Hopin to take him home Thursday.
God isn't real, Beer is good and people are crazy, there I fixed it.

I will compare a beagle to wrestler. A football player twist his ankle and hobbles off the field, a wrestler will brake his arm and look at the clock and say "I can finish coach".

I have had 2 beagles show some impressive strength, 1 caught a few bebees from a gun shot. I freaked out and she kept hunting. 2nd one got hit by a car and broke his hind leg. He didn't want to get carried but just wanted back with the pack.

Some things might just be to much to come back from, but I will put my money on a beagle anyday, good luck

That should have been an easy diagnosis for a vet - even without an x-ray. You'll probably have a big vet bill and a dead dog. Time for a new Vet.
