Is anyone else having trouble with the deeper snow ? Dogs cant seem to line out the trail, jumped 4 today an the dogs would see the rabbit an run it then loose it, could barely even trail it more than 30 yards. We had 7 dogs out today an they all had trouble. Just wondering if anyone has the same problem.

Seems like it depends on the rabbit. One with lots of scent they hammer, others not as well. Maybe the just hole up sooner than bucks.

We have about 10"s of snow and about 8" of that is straight crunchy ice, I ain't running my hounds on that.. Cut their feet up bad and then they gonna be laid up for longer than they would if I didn't run in this snow junk!!

Here in Centeral OH we got ice under the snow and i will not run on it either cause it cuts up thier feet but befor the ice was out and it was just powdery snow i was out running just one old dog and a 16 month and my old dogs had trouble with the first 3 rabbits mostly cause of the young dog but after the young dog got out from infront of her the races got longer and when he stayed out of it completely she finally got a rabbit that stayed up a ran.
The next day to another young dog and he could not run the wild rabbit but he run the hair off my sawan rabbit.
i think it is a little of every thing the rabbit has to stay up and the dogs have to have soom sense about how to run on the snow. not saying anybodys dogs are no good it just to all come together to make a good race.
Lets face it if you where brown and everything else was white would you stay up in the day light. My gues is you try going at night with just two or three older dogs ( 4 yrs and up ) then see what you get. A few years back when my health was better thier where three of us guys with one old dog each and one young dog each and we went at night a lot and the rabbit flat slammed it alomst ever time.
But i don't everything still learning a lot and I am 52 yrs old with 29 years of run both day and night boht fast and slowe style of dogs.
One thing i have learn if they cann't run I brake them down and run solo that has always told me every thing i want to now about the problem. good luck and the snow melts soon.

We just came in from running. Dogs had trouble but they are young--19 months or less. Just couldn't seem to smell them enough. With 8-10 inches of snow the rabbits are using runs thru the snow in both directions. Could have killed one or two if we'd been hunting. Temp barley above 20.
