Season opener ..........

Post by LR Patch »

Season opener , Lets here your plans , Is it a annual evet that U & UR pals do every year or what ever it maybe. Our season don't open till Nov. something. Think the 1st Saturday .
Myself I'm just plain ole ready for cooler weather ! Don't kill many but love to hunt . My & 2 buddies do a annul hunt , we all take off work the week of Thanksgiving & hunt every day that week. This started really when I was about 10 yrs old with family
including papaw , dad , uncles & cousins . Of coarse most have passed  on or unable to get around much. So now it's 2 pals & myself or a newbie that's wants to go . It sure brings back a bunch of good memories of times on by .My papaw always had beagles & fox hounds , Dad was the true beagle , sure wish he could get around still . Man oh man how time fly's .
Lets here your stories ......

Fortunately, my Dad gets around well at 72.
I take him with me on nearly every trip I make to run with friends up by my cabin, when Chuck (reddog) and I get together, etc. as well as running hounds around home.

Dad grew up in an orphanage with his brothers and sisters, but stayed at his Grandpa and Grandma's Farm in the summer.
He told me stories of Grandpa going out hunting and bringing back the exact number of spent shells that he had game.
Grandpa never wanted anyone to know where he hunted. Dad would ask him, where did you get them at (game), and he'd tell him in the woods!
He would send Dad to the woods with counted out shells, and if Dad didn't come back with 1 game animal per spent shell, he would get his behind chewed out.
Grandpa hunted with a single 20 gauge or a .22, which I have both guns to this day. He taught Dad as he has me, one shell per game animal.
Grandpa passed when I was a kid and I never did get to go hunting with him. :(

Anyways, (sorry for getting off track there) Dad and I expect to be making several trips up to my cabin starting in Oct.
I gave him one of my Hammer x Pearl pups from last year so he has his own hound to run.
My new brother in law (2 years) is a great guy so I gave him one of my running hounds and Dad and I will be making some trips up by him as well to run this fall and winter.

I have all my vacation yet and expect to use it to run hounds, one week in Oct., one week in Dec. and one more week in ?
We don't shoot many anymore because I get so much enjoyment just running hounds and our rabbit population has been dismal the last couple of years.

Well since I'm getting back into beagling this will be my first in 5 years. But it'll be the most memorable!! It'll be the first for my son's ages 3,5 and 7. It's their first hunt and their papaw will be with them and has been helping them get ready for it. Can't wait for it to get here. As the 3 year old says if my dog can't catch it we'll shoot that rabbit. Lol

My oldest son and I are going to Maine to hunt hare for two weeks. Get home for a couple days to rest up and then our Ohio cottontail season will open up Nov. 1st.

My son and I are going out with some boys that always hunt with us. They are good hunters and are good about helping kids have fun with it. My son has his red rider oiled up and about 1500 BB's ready to go. Here is a couple pics from last year. He had a blast!

I am taking a couple students and parents out after school the first few days of the season. I always try to find a few young hunters and introduce them to beagling every year.

WV season doesn't come in until the first Saturday in November. It will be a 3 generation hunt dad at 86 years young me at an old 62 and my son 36.Can't be thin skin to hunt with us Dad tells me every year Helen Keller could shoot better than me.If you dare miss the trash talk is headedyour way. What a blessing to have dad still has the health to go with us (we don't hunt flat land up and down the hills ).Of course we have to hear about his dogs of the past.Same old stories but never get tired of hearing of hearing them.
