I have only saw a handful out of butkus run but I have really liked what I saw. They were very similar in style very close check work and tight on the line and what I would call slightly over medium speed. I am picking up my first butkus pup Saturday and am excited to see how she runs. I have been wanting to try a dog out of him for sometime now. Just looking for some honest opinions on things you have saw good and bad about some off spring of his please no putting butkus down because it does take two to make a litter of pups. Just looking for some good feedback.

I have owned several off of him. I have two off of him here now. As you described, good hunt, close, close check work and quick with that. Medium to upper medium speed. Enough foot to steadily move the track, they are not reckless, they run the rabbit as scenting allows.

I own Butkus' littermate sister and a half sister to him, same style. They are just good ole rabbit dogs. Maybe not the flashiest on the ground, but they can sure fix what the "flashy" ones may mess up... LOL.

Consistancy with Butkus is that he will put true point of loss check work in them. They will have a nose that can allow them to bark on tracks that may sometimes get them in trouble, but they sure do jump a lot of rabbits by trailing them to a jump. See that on a regular basis.

I have raised one litter off of him and will have future litters if Tim will allow that to happen. I have probably seen close to a dozen dogs out of him run. Some were better than others, but they consistanly showed these same traits, sign of a good reproducer in my opinion. Many of that number were better than just average, they were good.

Knock on his pups is "mouthy" or can they run the rabbit when other dogs can't??? and "medium speed" or do they just run the rabbit as scent allows, slowing when they can't drive it??? Mine open early, but produce the rabbit. Fine by me. Just had conversations with several folks that stated in general about Shooter and Butkus bred hounds, they were "mouthy". I have not seen it to where I could not tolerate it. You get that with big nose. Show me a truly big nose and they will open earlier in some situations and scenting conditions. When I say early, I mean they are still moving a track that can be jumped in short order. Just what I have seen. There are others who probably have more knowledge than I do.

I like his pups and I like the line he represents. Joe K. has TOP hounds and gets them to potential many only dream of. He is then NOT AFRAID to sell them and reload with more!!

Keep'em coming Green Bay Kennels!

I've raised several pups off Butkus and can verify what most everyone else has claimed. Good hunt, close check work, medium fast. The only thing I haven't ever had with any of my pups was any extra mouth that some claim to have had. No cold trailing,no babbling in the check when they open 99.9% of the time they have it. Of course the two females I breed to him also had very clean mouths. I think a lot of people lose sight of the fact there are two sides to every pedigree and usually the stud dog gets the credit for the good stuff as well as the blame for the bad. Of course this is just my opinion from my experience from the two litters I raised which are about 2 1/2 years old now.

Out of the 3 I have there is a total of 0 extra mouth
Although I have seen a couple (not mine) that would open and
go with a track like it was jumped and the rest of the
Pack would just run along behind until the track warmed
up enough for them to give mouth. Hard to get a jump on a
dog like that. I'm not that particularly fond of that but it might
Just be because mine don't do it. LOL
